Susquehanna steamboats come to life at July 15 talk The Wyoming Historical & Geological Society of Wilkes-Barre will present a slide lecture by F. Charles Petrillo of Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, July 15, at 7:15 p.m., as part of the Society's Centennial Lecture series. The Society is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its museum, built in 1893. The museum is located behind the Osterhout Library on South Franklin Street in the heart of the city. Steamboat navigation on the Susquehanna River was at- tempted in the mid-1820s between York and the New York State line, but commercial passage along the “shallow river proved too impracti- cal. Limited steamboat service to haul passengers and freight was again tried in the early 1850s between Tunkhannock and Wilkes-Barre. Between 1875 and 1900 there was regular steam- boat service on the Susquehanna River among the ports of Pittston, Wilkes-Barre, Nanticoke. Petrillo has written widely on Susquehanna River history. In 1986 the Center for Canal History and Technology in Easton pub- lished his book “Anthracite & Slackwater: The North Branch Canal 1828-1901." He has also published articles on the river's art history and other canal sys- tems. In August the historical society will publish his latest book “Steamboats on the Susquehanna: The Wyoming Val- ley Experience.” He has previ- ously produced a history of Har- veys Lake steamboats in his book entitled “Harveys Lake” published by the local society in 1991. The lecture will be held at 7:15 p.m. at First United Methodist Church (across from Irem Temple), 47 N. Franklin St., in Wilkes- Barre. The lecture is free to the public, but seating is limited. Plymouth and Embroiderers’ Guild to meet July 21 The Wyoming Valley Chapter of The Embroiderers’ Guild of America, Inc. will hold its regular meeting on Wednesday, July 21, at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Franklin and Northampton Sts., Wilkes- Barre.
