8 The Dallas Post Back Mountain Library Auction ® a Wednesday, July 7, 1993 New arts and crafts booth holds treasures Visitors to the Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction will find several new booths featuring crafts and sand art this year. Paula Scott and Peggy Harvey have been soliciting handcrafts from area crafts groups and artisans to offer for sale at the auction. The crafts will be offered for the artisans’ suggested price, with all proceeds going to the library. “The Back Mountain is fortunate to have many talented craftspersons,” Mrs. Harvey said. “We expect to have many different and unusual items for sale.” Frames, calligraphy, Scheerenschnitte (framed paper cutting), jewelry, ceramics, floral arrangements, basketry, stencilling, knitted items, wooden objects and country crafts are among the many interesting works available at the Crafts Booth. Sure to appeal to the younger set, the Sand Art booth will be operated by nearly 30 young women from Cadette-Senior Girl Scout Troop 622 and other troops in Girl Scout Neighborhoods 24 and 25. “In making Sand Art, you pour layers of colored sand into a baby food jar, which makes very nice patterns,” said troop leader Jamie Kozemko. “By tilting the jar or poking pointed objects into the outside of the layers, you can make some unusual Accessorize ed M. ore Jo Ann Castellino, Prop. The girls don’t earn a badge or patch for their work; they're volunteering their time as a community service. “Helping out where needed and serving the community are part of the Girl Scout Law, followed by all Girl Scouts,” Mrs. Kozemko said. “Who knows — in 15 or 20 years these girls will probably be here working on the auction.” Both booths will be open during regular auction hours. : POST PHOTO/GRACE R.
