Reds, Rangers cop regular season crowns The Rangers finished the sea- son with a perfect record while the Reds won their fourth consecu- tive National League regular sea- son title as Back Mountain Base- ball completed regular season play in the major leagues. The Rangers, under manager Tom Evans, finished the season with perfect 20-0 record to win the American League title while the Reds, under manager Rich Jumper, recorded a 15-5 mark in the National League. The Astros, under the salient coaching of manager Jack Snyder, posted the league’s most impressive turn- around, as they compiled a 12-7 record this season. The top four teams in each league are cur- rently participating in playoff competition. CARDINALS 12 - PHILLIES 7 The Cardinals scored five runs in the fifth inning to break a 7-7 deadlock and post the win. Scott Walsh picked up the win, striking out seven in five innings. Jesse Yarnal had three hits to pace the of Cardinals while Walsh added a “% FE EE Ee we RE ee ~ pair. Dominic Castrignano added a double for the Cards. Matt Hoover, Josh Lesinski and David Chiampi each had two hits for the Phillies, who battled back from a 4-0 lead to take a 7-6 lead before the Cardinal comeback. YANKEES 9 - TIGERS 5 Steve Federspiel picked up the mound win and helped his own cause with three hits to lead the Yankees to their first win of the season. Rich Dougal had two hits for the Yankees while Charlie Martin added a double. Bill. Duda had two of the Tigers’ five hits during the contest. GIANTS 10 - YANKEES 3 J.J. Smith had three hits, in- cluding a double and triple to pace the Giants. Tom Byron and Russ Eyet each had a pair of hits for the Giants while winning pitcher Jayson Pope helped his own cause with three hits. Brad Balutis led the Yankees with three hits while Rick Dougal added a pair, including a double. RANGERS 10 - HARVEYS LAKE METS 7 Mike Ferko blasted three hits, including a home run to lift the Rangers over the Mets. Kevin Pizzano picked up the win, strik- ing out 11 and walking just two. Pizzano had a pair of hits while teammate Matt Gingo belted a bases-loaded double. Palmer Edwards led the Mets with two hits. RANGERS 14 - ORIOLES 2 Mike Faneck struck out eight batters and allowed just one hit in three innings as the Rangers beat the Orioles. Kevin Pizzano, Mike Noell Brooks headed to Wilkes University in fall Lake-Lehman High School field - hockey star Noell Brooks has announced that she will continue her academic and athletic career at Wilkes University this fall. As a member of the Lady Knights field hockey team, Brooks helped the team to a record of 14- 1 this past year. As a two year starter and letter-winner Brooks was a two time Wyoming Valley Conference All-Star. In addition to field hockey, Brooks also played softball and is a three time Wyoming Valley Conference All-Star. Off the field Brooks is a mem- ber of the Key Club and is a peer tutor. She is also a member of the © National Honor Society. Brooks, who was also recruited . by Susquehanna, Drew, Scran- ' ton and Princeton, chose Wilkes + for its academic and athletic pro- . grams. “Academically Wilkes has avery - fine reputation while athletically I WN know I will be able to contribute,” said Brooks. “Noell is an outstanding stu- dent-athlete and a credit to Lake- Lehman High School,” said Wilkes field hockey coach Addy Ma- NOELL BROOKS latesta. “She will reeive a Wilkes Presidential Scholarship which is a credit to the effort she makes in the classroom. Saturday, July 10 at 9 a.m. The race begins at the hospital (located on Route 6 in Tunkhannock) and follows primarily secondary paved roads through Tunkhannock and Lemon townships. Trophies will be awarded to the top male and female finishers, as well as to the top three finishers in male and female age divisions. Registration is $6 in advance, $7 on race day. Pat Barnard had a triple for Orioles while Jim Kozemko added a single. PHILLIES 7 - ASTROS 4 The Phillies exploded for five runs in the fourth inning after trailing 3-2 en route to the win. Charles Whitehead got the win, striking out eight in the final three innings. Rich Samanas struck out eight in five innings despite the loss. Mike Brown had three hits for the Phillies, including a three-run home run, while Whitehead, Josh Birth and Josh Katyl had the other hits for the winners. Matt Morris blasted a two-run home run for the Astros while Rich Samanas had a pair of hits and Russell Wenrich added a single. FIRST ROUND PLAYOFF REDS 6 - DODGERS 3 Jim Davis scattered four hits and struck out six in going the distance to lead the Reds. Jon- athan Habrack led the Reds with three hits while Davis added a triple. Blake Bicking and Josh Dukas had the other hits for the Reds. Mike McHale led the Dodgers with a double while Matt Loftus, John Isaac and Mark Chopyak had the other hits for the Dodg- ers. Loftus pitched well for the Dodgers, scattering six hits while striking out five. RANGERS 9 - RED SOX 6 Matt Gingo had four hits to lead the Rangers over the Red Sox. Kevin Pizzano had a double for the Rangers while Mike Fan- eck and Matt Wycallis each added a pair of hits. Jonathan Kanarr and Seth LaJeunesse led the Red Sox with a pair of hits apiece, including a double. SportsShorts Long drive contest at 4 Seasons Four Seasons Golf Club, Exeter, will be holding their third annual long drive contest on Saturday, July 17 starting at 6 p.m. The cost is $5 per person for three shots. The field is limited to the first 50 paid contestants. Last year’s longest drives exceeded 340 yards. This year a chipping contest will also be held. Poynton, Smith gain softball honors Three Wyoming Valley Conference products are among a quartet of College Misericordia softball players who have been honored by the Pennsylvania Athletic Conferenece. Laura Poynton of Dallas, Jen Smith of Lake-Lehimman and Bonnie Lee of Wyoming Area were all named first-team ALL-PAC while Heather Beadle of Binghamton, NY made the second team. Poynton, a junior second baseman, was named all conference for the third straight year at her third different position. She was second on the team in hitting at .338 and led the team with 20 runs scored. Smith, a freshman, first baseman, led the Lady Cougars in hitting at .392. She scored 15 runs and had 14 RBI's YMCA swim program begins June 28 The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA, a United Way Agency, will offer a Backyard Swimming program. This swimming program is designed to have a YMCA certified swimming instructor come to a privately owned pool and teach children and adults water safety and swimming skills. The instructor will come to the pool at the hour agreed upon by the pool owner and the “Y'. The classes will meet twice a week for three weeks beginning the week of June 28. The season opener was a barn- burner with new entrant The Mounts edging Jim-Jon 63-61 in overtime. Rich Butcofski and Ted Jackson led the winners with 11 each while Brian Brady and Ed Thomas added 10. Tom Shalata had 19, Ryan Swank 17 and Jeff Poorman 15 for Jim-Jon. The middle game was also a nip and tuck affair that saw The Field- house edge Payne Printery 67-64. Joe Darling had a big night for The Fieldhouse with 21 and Mark Millington added 10. Brett Gauntlett had 15 and Rob Wilson 13 for Payne. Dugan's Pub dominated the nitecap and went on to an 82-61 win over Stegmaier. Frank De- bona fired in 22 and John Mayer 20 for Dugans. Mike Luksic had 16 and Bill Cuff 11 for Stegmaier 1857. This year the league has ex- panded to seven teams ‘and also added additional games.
