Bear (continued from page 1) trained to rescue people - and sometimes stray kittens — from trees, so we simply applied our rescue knowledge to the bear.” “I've helped people before, but this was my first bear rescue,” said Asplundh worker John Kil- lian, who operated the bucket and tied the lines around the sleepy bruin. As the bear was carefully low- ered to the ground, onlookers - cheered and applauded, crowd- ing forward for a closer look and a photo, despite repeated warnings from police to keep their distance. “If that bear wakes up, you're going to have problems;” Miers warned the crowd. Game Commission officials said that the bear, secured to a litter- type device on the back of their truck, would be taken “to the mountains” and released. An opportunistic feeder,- the bear was probably in the*atea looking for food in residents! ’gar- bage cans, since the grubs and berries which it normally feedsion aren't ripe yet, Miers said. * Altough bears are nonmallykhy: they can become aggressive if tHey believe that they are cornered, he added. “Our main concern was. pro- tecting both the people and the bear so that no one got hurt,” Miers said. “One of our biggest problems is that people want-to geta closer look and end up ¢has- ing the bear, which then retreats, climbs a tree or becomes aggres- sive.” If area residents see a bear in their yard, Miers recommendsthat they call the Game Commission at 675-1143 and leave the ‘bear alone. * protosied ADT] Securny Sor] CRIME FIGHTER 195 The System includes: Property transfers recorded at ' the Luzerne County Court House from May 24, 1993 to June 2, 1993.
