Forty-Fort, Grades N - 8 EE a 10 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, June 2, 1993 Women's conference June 5 at PSU The 9th Annual Luzerne County Women's Conference will feature over 70 workshops presented by more than 100 volunteers around the theme of “Diversity Unites Us.” “Our theme offers conference at- tendees an opportunity to exam- ine and celebrate the variety of cultures, worldviews and perspec- tives which enrich our area,” according to Ellen Perna Smith, conference coordinator. Conference goers can choose from a menu of workshop offer- ings under such broad categories of the arts, business, the world, family, health and spirit and self- discovery. The conference theme is reflected in workshops such as “The African American Woman's Journey” a cultural exploration of black women in America; “Preju- dice Reduction in Children” on how to help children to grow up appreciative of cultural differ- ences; and “Foreigners in a For- eign Land” which examines the experiences of five women who immigrated to us in the latter half of this century. The annual conference will also feature Dr. Valerie Batts as its keynote speaker. Dr. Batts is the founder and executive director of Visions, Inc. which provides train- ing in all areas of multicultural- ism and diversity. The conference will be held at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus in Lehman on Saturday, June 5 and is supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. Dr. Mary Glennon, RSM, '62, Dallas; Sr. Mary Carmel McGar- igle, RSM, '52, Dallas; Sr. Mari- anna Gildea, RSM, '28, Dallas; Joan Krause, '58, Nanticoke; Sr. Cecilia Meighan, RSM, Esq., '58, Kingston; and Enola Barlik, '63, Old Bridge, NJ, will be honored for their leadership and outstand- ing contributions to their com- munities and alma mater. The honored guests will receive theirawards at the annual Alumni Awards Dinner, held on campus, Saturday, June 5. Glennon, Misericordia’s aca- demic dean, will receive the Mother Mary Catharine McGann Achieve- ment Award, the Alumni Associa- tion's highest award. She will be recognized for demonstrating the qualities of excellence, achieve- ment and pioneering spirit that marked the life of Mother Cather- ine. Glennon will also serve as a guest speaker at the awards cere- mony. McGarigle, who will also be a guest speaker at the awards cere- mony, will receive the Sister of Mercy Award for exceptional serv- ice to the College. She served as chair of the Misericordia music department for 18 years and is currently the College archivist. Gildea, Krause, Meighan and Barlik will receive the prestigious class medallions which recognize reunion class members for their professional contributions and commitment to community.
