Students in Coal R Anyone who is familiar with the story of the coal region, knows the role played by the “breaker boys” during the boom years. Sorting coal from slate for hours on end, theirs was a task that was back-breaking, poorly-paid, yet valuable to the industry. On Saturday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, Wilkes- Barre, five of the 10 breaker boy roles in A Candle, A Kiss, A Coal Region Opera will be per- formed by Wyoming Seminary Lower School students Jeffrey Ferraro, Wyoming; Meghan Erwine, Hunlock Creek; Paul Santarelli, Dallas; Andrew Volpetti, Dallas and Kourtney Koslosky, Shavertown. Composed by Paul W. Miller, music professor at Penn State Schuylkill campus, with libretto written by Karen A. Hube, for- merly of Pottsville, the opera is set at the turn of century, and tells of the miners’ struggle in the coal fields, as well as their personal hardships and trage- dies.
