The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, May 12, 1993 11 Luzerne County Women's Conference will be June 5 The Ninth Annual Luzerne County Women's Conference will be held Saturday, June 5 from 8:15a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus in Lehman. This year's theme is “Diversity Unites Us” and will feature guest speaker Valerie Batts. Dr. Batts is Executive Direc- tor/Co-founder of VISIONS, Inc., and a licensed clinical psycholo- gist with over 16 years’ experience in training a variety of individuals @ and organizations. Dr. Batts has helped design multicultural learn- ing/training for Procter and Gamble at the Mehoopany plant and over 20 P & G locations. Dr. Batts, originator of VISIONS training model is the author of Modern Racism: New Melodies for the Same Old Tunes. Dr. Batts has traveled extensively through- out the United States, Holland and Africa. She has written sev- eral articles on her experiences in South Africa. Dr. Batts is married and has two children. More than 70 workshops are scheduled covering a wide range of topics for all ages. Workshops include “Communicating with Power,” “Learning from Mentors,” “Traditional Black Stories," “Feminisms: Must They Divide Us,” “Profile of Faith,” “The For- bidden Heroism of Women," “Yoga,” “Journaling” plus many more. The conference opens with registration at 7:45 a.m. The opening session, including the keynote speech by Ms. Batts, will run from 8:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Workshop sessions begin at 10 a.m. and will end at 4:30 p.m. with a closing mixer. Cost is $16 by May 21, $21 afterwards. Youth under 18 admitted free of charge and persons over 65 are $10 by May 21. A light lunch (including meatless options) will be available for purchase but must be ordered in advance registration. Persons may bring their own lunch as well. Child care and transporta- tion arrangements are available as well as special scholarship arrangements for registrations made before May 21. Hendley to speak at Penn @ State W-B commencement The commencement address at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus will be given by W. Clark Hendley, Ph.D., dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Bridgewa- ter, State College in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. The commencement exercises will be held Saturday, May 15, 10:30 a.m., on the lawn of Hay- field House at the Penn State campus in Lehman. More than 60 students are expected to receive associate and baccalaureate de- grees at the ceremony, according to Campus Executive Officer Dr. William A. Pearman. A reception honoring students and their fami- lies will be held following the cere- mony. ' Hendley is a member of the American Association of Univer- sity Professors, the American Association for Higher Education, the Modern Language Associa- tion and the National Association of Academic Affairs Administra- tors, among others. He is an ACE (American Council on Education) Fellow, a member of Phi Kappa Phi, and received Faculty Research Grants and a Dye Foundation Fellowship. @& He has written, presented and W.
