i @ The Dallas Post Couple will give view of Europe war By GRACE R. DOVE Post Staff Croatia and Bosnia-Hercegov- ina, two republics carved from the former nation of Yugoslavia, are e studies in contrasts: while pil- grims flock to the little Bosnian town of Medjugorje, where the Virgin Mary is reported to have appeared, nearby villages in both countries are being torn apart by fighting. Back Mountain residents will have the opportunity to learn first- hand of the “ethnic cleansing” and other horrors suffered by the citizens of Croatia and Bosnia- oe Hercegovina Tuesday, May 11, in a special program presented by native Croatians Helen and Jo- seph Sarcevic at Shavetown United Methodist Church. “Mr. and Mrs. Sarcevic, who say they have both lost relatives and friends to Serbian aggression, regularly travel to their home- land, leading pilgramages to Medjugorje and stopping along the way to render humanitarian aid to people living in refugee centers. “Everyone who isn't Serbian is in danger,” Mrs. Sarcevic said. “We have seen churches, hospi- tals, schools, roads, bridges — all reduced to rubble. The Serbians wipe out the entire civilization in an area, occupy it and rebuild it their own way.” The Croatians are mostly © Catholic, with some Moslems, while the Serbians, once Ortho- dox Christians, are now non-be- lievers due to decades of Commu- nist rule, she said. “The people are really strug- gling, reduced to subsistence liv- ing. They try to grow their own food, but must rely mainly on outside help,” Mrs. Sarcevic con- tinued. IN HER NATIVE LAND - Helen Sarcevic will speak about the conflict in the former Yugoslavia May 11 at the Shavertown United Methodist Church. She and her husband left the country in 1957 but return frequently to lead pilgrimages and offer aid. Considered by the Communists to be intellectuals and therefore threats to the government, the Sarcevics fled their country in 1957, staying in a refugee camp in Italy for two years until they were allowed to emigrate to the United States. The process euphemistically called “ethnic cleansing” was going on while the Communists ruled Yugoslavia, but the government presented a false picture to the world, Mrs. Sarcevic said. Only after referendums in 1990 resulted in the republics of Croatia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Slovenia, Vojvodia, Montenegro and Macedonia splitting from Yugoslavia, did the efforts of the Serb-led Yugoslav army's offen- sives against Moslem and Croatian villages become publicized. ac- cording to pamphlets distributed Meet the candidates May 11 at Westmoreland -.
