Area resident Grace Dove Os- trum has been selected as one of nine artisans of the Lenni-Lenape Historical Society in Allentown to exhibit traditional Native Ameri- can craftwork at Hands Across the Hemisphere, a craft show sponsored by the American Crafts Council to commemorate the Year of American Craft: 1993, in Wash- ington, D.C., the week of June 16- 23. The Lenni-Lenape Historical Society is one of 10 Native crafts groups in the United States to be invited to Hands Across the Hemisphere, where the work of 110 artisans from the United States will be displayed, along with the works of 200 other arti- sans from 40 other craft groups from Canada, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Of mixed Native (Lenni-Lenape, Eastern Cree and Seminole) and European heritage, Ms. Ostrum does beadwork restorations and makes beaded jewelry and tradi- tional ceremonial pieces from original designs. She is a board member, multic- ultural educator and outreach worker for the Lenni-Lenape His- torical Society, a nonprofit organi- zation dedicated to preserving the traditional culture of the Original People of Pennsylvania (Lenni- Lenape). Through the Society, she spearheaded a nationally-recog- nized relief effort in September, 1992, to aid the residents of the five Seminole and Miccosukee reservations in Florida devastated by Hurricane Andrew. the reser- vations were not eligible for fed- eral disaster relief because the federal government considers Native reservations to be sovreign nations.
