Davies, academic dean at Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, Kingston, and Bryan Rutledge, director of col- lege guidance, announced recently that Melanie Evans, Trucksville and Susan Valentine, Dallas, were named National Merit finalists. Miss Evans and Miss Valentine were named Wyoming Seminary’s two semi-finalists last fall together with seven commended students. In the fall of 1991, more than one milloin students in 19,000 United States secondary schools entered the 1992 merit program by taking the PSAT. Top scorers in every state representing about one-half of one percent of each state's high school graduating class, are included in the nationwide semi-finalist pool. These ranged from the reunification of Germany to ‘the former Third Reich. Mr. ‘Ha tke, ‘Who \was visiting with the Robert Bayer family in Shavertown, took time from his busy schedule to come to the high school. He thoroughly enjoyed his visitand the students were able to get a German's perspective about some contemporary issues. Bette Segrave-Daly Director of Nurses Thomas Sweeney Administrator Dallas fifth graders poetry will be published Mrs. Nulton, teacher of fifth grade English classes at the Dal- las Elementary School, has been notified that poems written by her students and submitted to the American Academy of Poetry have been selected for publication in “The Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans.” Early in the school year, under the direction of Mrs. Nulton, the students learned process writing. The classes were designed to fos- ter creative expression. Accord- ing to M.G. Nickles, editor, “The poems were selected as some of the most creative submissions and have earned pages in the 1993 edition of “The Anthology Of Po- etry by Young Americans.” Mrs. Nulton, a 1988 Fellow with the Northeastern PA Writing Proj- ect, is presently a Teacher/Con- sultant with the Writing Project. Dallas Middle School to host History Night May 12 Members of the Dallas Middle School social studies department will host a History Night on Wednesday, May 12, from 7-9 p.m., in the middle school. Displays will be set up on the first floor showing the work of students in grades, six, seven and eight. Drawings, maps, charts, written and audio visual reports are some types of projects that will be presented for public view. The work reflects classroom les- sons that have been learned dur- ing the year. In addition a computer preseng tation will take place showing how social studies learning can be aided by the use of computer data.
