Both returning champions, the Rangers in the American League and the Reds in the National League, began the defense of their titles with perfect 2-0 marks. The Rangers, under direction of man- ager Tom Evans and his effica- cious assistant coach Bob Fan- eck, edged a strongA'’s team, 4-3. The Indians, who were 17-2 last season, and the Cardinals proved to be teams to be reckoned with as they also logged a perfect 2-0 week. Here are the standings through April 25 and a recap of available games (two games were not played to their conclusion and will be completed at a later date): AMERICAN LEAGUE Indians 2 Rangers 2 AS. . 1 Orioles 0- Red Sox 0 Tigers 0 EE: oe State champs Yankees NATIONAL LEAGUE Cardinals 2-0 Reds 2-0 Astros 1-1 Dodgers 1-1 Pirates 1-1 Giants 0-2 Phillies RANGERS 4, ATHLETICS 3 Mike Ferko delivered a clutch two-out single in the bottom of the sixth to score Matt Gingo and give the Rangers a come-from-behind win. The A's scored single runs in the first and third to take a 2-0 lead. After the Rangers tied the score at 2-2, Neil Dymond singled, stole second and scored on a Matt Jackson single to give the A's a 3- 2 lead. Mike Faneck and Kevin Piz- zano combined to strike out 12 batters, each striking out six in three innings. Gingo had a pair ot hits for the ‘Rangers while Faneck added a double. Justin Hoover and Kyle Droppers led the A's with a pair of hits apiece. Youth Soccer Association will hold registration for the upcoming Fall '93 Intramural Soccer season on Saturday, May 1, at the Dallas Elementary School Cafeteria from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Registration will be limited to the number of coaches that sign-up. SportsShorts Gauntlett off to good start on mound Junior lefthander, Brett Gauntlett of Dallas has become a solid hurler for the Hampden-Sydney Tigers so far this season. He is currently 1-0 and is second on the squad with a 2.70 ERA. He is part of a strong H-SC pitching staff that has a 2.72 team ERA. The Tigers are currently 8-2 overall and 3-1 in ODAC play. Golf schools to start at Four Seasons Golf Schools starting at Four Seasons Golf Club, Exeter: Ladies starting Tuesday, May 4; Mens starting Wednesday, May 5; Juniors starting Friday, May 7. Each school will consist of four sessions from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The Golf Schools will be instructed by Rick Rydzewski who is Certified PGA Golf Professional and a graduate of Wilkes University. Rick competed an Advanced PGA Professional Training School and a Psychology of Playing Seminar and recently completed a PGA Teaching Seminar in Philadelphia. Seth LaJeunesse struck out 10 batters for the Red Sox in going the dis- tance. PIRATES 20, PHILLIES 2 The Pirates scored 11 runs in the last inning en route to a lop- sided win. Tom Roche led the Pi- rate attack with four hits, all singles while Mike Kashnicki and Nathan Walters added a pair of hits. E.J. Ishley picked up the win, striking out six in three in- nings. Mike Brown led the Phillies with two hits, including a double and Josh Birth had the only other hit for the Phillies. ASTROS 10, DODGERS 3 Matt Morris opened his 1993 mount campaign with a complete game no-hitter for the Astros. Morris also helped his own cause with a double. Russell Wenrich had a pair of hits for the winners. Scott Walsh picked up the" win, striking out five. Mike Regan got the Cardinals out of trouble in the third inning when he turnied a double play with the bases loaded. Regan also had a double for the Cards. E.J.Ishley pitched three strong innings for the Pirates and helped himself with a double at the plate. DODGERS 14, GIANTS 3 Mark Chopyak struck out 15 batters in going the distance and the Dodgers broke open a close game with nine runs in the third inning. Jon Saba led the Dodgers with five hits while Collin McHale added a pair of hits. Seth Moyer had a double for the Dodgers. J.J. Smith pounded a two-run home run for the Giants and team- mate Jason Pope added a double. Dallas High School graduates on LCCC softball team Tiffany Owens, Ann Faulls and Stephanie Kriner, all graduates of Dallas High School, are members of the 1993 Luzerne County Community College women’s softball team. Owens serves as one of the captains of this year’s team and plays third base for the Minutemaids. Faulls also serves as one of the team’s captains and plays left field. Kriner is a pitcher. Chuck Fehlinger led the Indian attack, blasting a two-run home run in the first and later adding a double. Mike Cleary had two hits for the Indians. Matt Hoover led the Phillies ~ with two hits, including a double and scored two runs. Charles Whitehead kept the Phillies in the game, pitching the third, fourth and fifth innings, yielding just one base hit and striking out seven. REDS 5, GIANTS 1 Josh Dukas got the upper hand on a pitcher's duel, tossing a two- hit complete game, striking out 13 batters and walking just one. Jonathan Habrack led the Reds with three hits, including a solo home run. Dukas added a double. J.J. Smith took the tough loss, striking out 13 batters and walk- ing just two in going the route. Smith and Jason Pope had the lone nits for the Giants. Grover the hound is found Luzerne County - On March 30 at 10 p.m. the Northeast Region Game Commission dispatcher received a phone call from a con- cerned resident of Dallas. whom, along with his wife, had heard “crying” from a small patch of woods along their road. The caller stated that he did not go in to see what it was but thought perhaps it was an injured or trapped ani- mal. The dispatcher contacted Deputy Jerry Kapral and ex- plained the situation to him. Jerry went out to investigate, not sure of what he would find. To his surprise, he found “Grover”, an 11-year-old hound who is quite feeble, who had wandered off from his invalid owner, fell into a hole just off the road and could not get out. By 10:30 p.m. Grover and owner were reunited. Grover was lucky, he had a passerby that heard his cries and called. He had a current license which enabled Deputy Kapral to locate the owner and most important, I have a deputy who cared enough to lend a helping hand and gave Grover a - WCO Donald R.
