Joan and Thomas Byron, Dallas, has advanced to the Pennsylva- nia state semi-final round of the fifth annual National Geography Bee, sponsored by National Geo- graphic World and Amtrak. As Sem's representative to the writ- ten component of the competi- tion, Byron took the test, and is among the 100 leading scorers and the only student from Luzerne County who qualified for the state level oral exam on April 2. InJanuary eight fifth-and sixth- grade students from Wyoming Seminary were part of the bee taking place in schools nation- wide. Tommy emerged as the school's first-round victor, and moved one step closer to winning a $25,000 scholarship. A total of 2,160 schools in the state participated in the geogra- phy bee. The final leg of the com- petition, the national geography bee, will be held May 25-26, and will air on PBS, hosted by Alex Trebek. The first place national winner receives a $25,000 college scholarship; second place winner $15,000 scholarship and the third place winner a $10,000 scholar- ship. Seminary Lower School to hold entrance tests April 3 Saturday, April 3 is the re- maining screening and scholar- ship test date at Wyoming Semi- nary Lower School. Annually the school awards three merit-based scholarships to students who perform best on a competitive exam and interview. In addition, screening for all prospective stu- dents interested in nursery, kin- dergarten and grades 1 through 8 will also be held on those dates beginning at 9 a.m, Two scholarships of $1,500 each will be awarded to two stu- dents in grades one through 4. An additional $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a fifth grade stu- dent. These scholarships are available to new students not currently enrolled in Wyoming Seminary, and are applied to the students’ first year at the Lower School for the 1993-94 academic year. Families who warrant assis- tantance beyond the merit award are encouraged to apply for finan- cial aid. Wyoming Seminary awarded more than $300,000 in financial aid to Lower School students in the 1992-93 academic year. Upward Bound students chosen The Wilkes University Upward ~ Bound Program has accepted 60 new members from 14 area high schools. These new members join the 80 current members in the pre-college experience that is designed to prepare students academically and personally for success in post-secondary edu- cation. The students will attend weekly academic and special classes and workshops on careers and self- development. They will also have an opportunity to attend the summer residential session, take educational trips. Those accepted include: Joy Holeman, Valerie Pawloski and Joy Scott from Dallas Area; Joshua Bower, Louise Musselman, Be- thany Offshack, Melissa Wasca- lus and Shawn Zona, Lake Lehman.
