8 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, February 17, 1993 Knights hang in against Spartans But Lehman lacked firepower in upper weignts By DAVE KONOPKI Sports Correspondent There was no wild celebration. No yelling. No screaming. No tele- phone calls from the President. The Lake-Lehman Black Knight wrestling team will not win its fourth consecutive Wyoming Val- ley Conference title. But anyone who has even remotely followed the local high school wresting scene this season knows that when the Black Knights left the gym following their 33-25l]oss to Wyoming Valley West last Saturday night, they did so as champions in their own right. Most people didn’t give the Black Knights a chance against the Spartans, the overwhelming favorite to capture the WVC West Division title this season. The same Spartans who easily dis- posed of perennial powerhouse Williamsport early in the season. The same Spartans who only had to throw their headgear on the mat and watch as the other teams ran scared. But for nearly 90 grueling minutes, the Black Knights gave the heavy favorites all they could handle. And in the process, they got confidence and something to build on for the future. “I thought our kids did a great job,” said Lake-Lehman co-coach Tom Williams, who coaches with Phil Lipski. “I think that the kids realize that they are a lot better than many people thought they were. Wrestling this well not only gives us confidence going into district competition, it also gives us a big lift for next year.” One person who was not sur- prised by the close outcome was Valley West head coach Steve Gavrish. “I knew that Lehman had a very good team,” said Gavrish, who has an outstanding group of wres- tlers. “I think that they proved that on Saturday. We knew that we would be in for a tough match. We told the kids that all week long. I wasn't surprised at all.” The Black Knights, thanks to a pin by Rick Finnegan at 103 and a major decision by John Morgan at 112, jumped out toa 10-0 lead against the Spartans, something that was expected. Valley West battled back to tie the meet at 13- 13 but consecutive wins by Burt Morgan at 140 and John Wood at 145 put the Black Knights back on top 19-13. From there it was all Valley West until the heavyweight match which saw Lehman's Ed Pitcavage register a pin. “We knew coming in that we needed to win seven or eight matches,” continued Williams. “There was no room for error. We only won six. But I thought that everyone wrestled hard.” Perhaps the Black Knight ef- fort, not just for this match, but for the entire season was epito- mized by the exploits of sopho- more Alan Scott, who wrestled at 119 pounds on Saturday night. Scott, wrestling in just his second varsity match of the sea- son, faced defending state run- ner-up Mike Brennan. An easy six points, you say? Hardly. Scott wrestled tremendously, losing a 10-3 decision to Brennan, but doing what his coach and team- mates wanted him to do; stay off his back and keep the Black Knights in the contest. “We lost to an excellent wres- tling team,” Williams concluded. “But we only lost to them by eight points. I thought we lost in a very respectable manner.” Very respectable, indeed. Basketball career milestone Lake-Lehman basketball team co-captain Richard Davis was awarded a souvenier basketball to commemorate his 1,000th point in his basketball career at a ceremony Tuesday, February 9. Joining him at the presentation were, from left, younger brother Mike Davis, mother Margaret Davis, Rich Davis, Black Knights’ 1,000 Point Club member Bill Bearde, father Rich Davis, Sr., and high school principal John Oliver.
