SE a 2 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, January 20, 1993 LB Rod Kaye shooting award-winning photos By GRACE R. DOVE Post Staff No matter what the action, a good sports photographer must be able to anticipate what is going to happen a fraction of a second in advance, and to be ready to capture the moment on film. It helps to be slightly telepathic. And to gain national recognition for one’s work requires a special talent. Sports photographer and Dallas Township native Rod Kaye, 29, currently living in Atlanta, GA, recently received national acclaim for his sports photography, having won the “Sports and Adventure” category in the second American Photo contest, sponsored in part by Outdoor Photographer magazine, and camera manufacturers Canon and Mamiya. The son of Peter and Donna Kaye of Dallas Township and a 1981 graduate of Dallas High School, Kaye became interested in art as a child, sketching scenes in pencil and chalk while still in grade school. “I hope those early pictures aren't still around,” he joked. When he was 16, Kaye's first 35-mm camera opened up an entire new world. He became intrigued with watching a scene come to life on film, studying other photographers’ works to see how they set up their shots and what went into a well-composed photo. His work has developed into award-winning photos of water sports which use a special process called manipulated pictures, in which a photo's images and colors have been enhanced. Hoping to realize a lifelong ambition of shooting the 1996 Summer Olympics — scheduled to be held in Atlanta — for a major client or publication, Kaye has honed his photographic skills by shooting regularly for an Atlanta health and fitness magazine and capturing the Braves baseball team, the Falcons football team and the Hawks basketball team on film. ; He has also shot the exciting “Head of the Chattahoochie,” a major endurance race in the world of rowing (crew). Between 1980 and 1982, Kaye was a photographer for The Dallas Post, shooting his first love — sports — as well as features, news'and human interest stories. “Linda Barletto ran the darkroom then,” he reminisced. “She gave me many tips on what to look for when setting up a photo. Linda's encouragement and help meant a lot.” Dallas Postveteran Olga Kostrobala, who has worked in classified ads and typesetting for many years, recalled that Kaye and her children were friends. “Rod was a very nice kid, very easy to work with,” she remembered. Kaye studied at Rhode Island School of Photography and is a graduate of the Portfolio Center, a photography school in Atlanta, where he works in computerized graphics and is a freelance photographer. ROD KAYE In describing his work and original special effects in the December, 1992, edition of Outdoor Photographer, Kaye concluded, “What makes photography so unique is that your imagination is the key to your own success.” Property transfers Property transfers recorded at 200k, 8 Sunnybrook Lane, Dallas, Local Jaycees plan events for Jaycee Week, 18th year Hotline to answer student : financial aid questions A new hotline service is avail- able to students and parents who have questions about financial aid for higher education programs.
