Those “ears” on an owl's head are actually just feathers growing a certain way. Third-grader Gaise Lacek stared wide-eyed at Dickory, a small male broad-winged hawk who had been mistakenly kept as a pet before coming to the raptor center. Fifth-graders Jessica Carter and Carrie Thorne enjoyed learning about the birds of prey. “We never saw them live before, only on TV,” they said. Billy Gordon wanted to know what the most common owl in our area is. “Screech owls like Fireball and great horned owl,” Rusk said. “Do owls have eyesight as good as an eagle?” asked R.J. Frey. Ten times better was the answer. Rise Scott liked the birds’ colors and learning how they catch their food. The kids giggled as Twister sat on his perch and turned his head 3/4 of the way around, sideways and almost upside down in order to see the lure that Rusk threw. “Owls have extra strong neck muscles to do this because they don't have strong eye muscles,” he explained. Twister later “left his mark” on the floor for janitor Elwood Womer to clean up. “It’s just part of the job,” Womer said. While settling the birds in their carriers for the next assembly, Rusk left the students with several words of wisdom: Don't ever shoot a raptor. Raptors are better off flying free. Don't ask Mom for one for Christmas. By GRACE R. DOVE Post Staff Hickory the Hawk and Fireball the Owl met the students at Lake- Noxen school last week. Residents of Three Rivers Raptor Rehabilitation Center in West Virginia, Hickory, Fireball and two other birds of prey (raptors) were introduced by education interesting facts about these majestic birds. “Birds of prey don't pray,” he joked. “Harriers aren't hairy.” Birds of prey, or raptors; include eagles, hawks, owls, vultures, condors, falcons, ospreys, kites and harriers. These birds capture small animals or eat carrion as their food. “Frogs, snakes, lizards - isn't that your favorite food too?" Rusk poked, as the students chorused, w-e-e-uw!” While carrying Hickory, Fireball, another young hawk named Dickory and a white (ghost) owl named Twister through the audience, he explained raptors’ special habits and the ways that they help man by eating mice and other harmful rodents. hooked beaks and strong talons their job of rodent -‘eonsumption easier. Sixth-grader Eric Pimm knew the answers to most of Rusk's questions. “I've read a lot about ese birds. I have seen lots of em, and other birds too. They're h 4 favorite animal,” he said. His friend, Mike Galka, imitated . Fireball's call perfectly. These include dietary, nursing and housekeeping functions. While holiday work is necessary, Segrave Daly said that the staff does no seem to mind. “The policy is to work every othe weekend and every other holiday, Segrave-Daly said. “While knowing you have to work doesn’t make things easier, the staff is willing to do its share of the work.” Segrave-Daly added that whilg Thanksgiving means that workers have to adapt their family schedule she said that Christmas is a more difficult holiday for her staff ta work. The Post makes a Even on a holiday, a successful business must continue to operate by use of a skeleton crew. On Thanksgiving Day, workers at the Meadows Nursing Center simply adapt their life to fit around the work schedule. “The attitude is that life goes on and many of the people who work 7 A.M. to 3 P.M. on Thanksgiving simply have their dinner later, while the night shift will enjoy a meal with their family earlier,” Bette Segrave-Daly said. Although the administrators at the Meadows have the holiday off, a great gift.
