School - (continued from page 1) “We began our efforts after the accident occurred by talking to the eleven students on the bus and contacting the parents and explaining the situation to them,” Dallas Assistant Superintendant Gil Griffiths said. Superintendant Gerald Wycallis spoke to the Brown family and offered the same assistance, Griffiths said. “Members of the student assistance team and children's services, as well as counselors from First Hospital met at 7 a.m. on November 2 to coordinate our efforts in dealing with the accident,” school district counselor Jack Wolensky said. Wolensky said that the district has four additional counselors in addition to a team from the Children Services Center. Griffiths said that while the initial concern was with the children on the bus, the district is making counselors available to anybody who needs help. “We are willing to help anyone involved with the accident from the parents of the other students to the bus driver,” Griffiths said. “The doors are open for students who want to talk to someone and we have one staff member who is going through the classes today in order to answer any questions,” Griffiths said. Dallas Middle School Principal Tony Martinelli said that the school will continue to monitor the students’ feelings over the next week and the counseling team will remain on standby if there is a problem. “The counselors from First Hospital and Children's Service Center can be at the Middle School within 15 minutes should there be a need for them,” Martinelli said. Wolensky added that a counselor has spoken to Brown's class section to explain what happened and answer any questions which students may have. In addition, a staff member is speaking to every class in order to answer questions, Griffiths said. The response to the accident is the result of the school district's crisis management program which keeps them ready for this type of situation, Griffiths said. Wolensky said that it is the district's Support for Teens at Risk (STAR) program that has coordinated the efforts with the counselors. “The STAR team met with the representatives from First Hospital and Children’s Services in order to plan everything out,” Wolensky: said. MITCHELL BROWN A program was held on November 3 so that parents and students could have an opportunity to discuss the accident Wolensky said. ~The school district decided to hold the program after Martinelli received questions from parents and students concerning the accident, Griffiths said. “Counselors were available and the evening was planned in order to give everybody a chance to discuss the grieving process,” Wolensky said. Kingston Township Police Chief Paul Sabol, who arrived at the accident minutes after it occurred, said that while his officers have not requested help, it is available to them. He added that the school district has been helpful in assisting police in the accident. “The accident is under investigation and we still have to interview a few more people; however, charges will probably not be filed against the bus driver,” Sabol said. Brown was killed at about 3 p.m. October 30 when the school bus he had exited ran over him near the intersection of Pioneer Avenue and Wellington Drive. Several classmates and the boy's mother were nearby at the time of the accident. Griffiths said that bus safety is stressed by the school district in the student handbook. Transportation coordinator Susan Farr said that a flyer is sent home to all students stressing the 10 foot danger zone around the bus.
