DOVE Post Staff School is more than justlearning between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. At least, that’s the message that a new group at Lake-Lehman Junior High School hopes to pass on to students and the community. Thirty-one parents and teachers of junior high students met Wednesday, October 7, to form a new Teens, Parents and Teachers organization. “It's a shame to close our doors at 4 p.m., when we know that our students could use our building after school for other purposes,” said Principal Robert O. Roberts. “I would like to see this organization serve as a link between the school and the community.” Roberts suggested intramural sports and hunter education courses as two possible programs that students could benefit from. The hunters’ safety education course is currently offered only once or twice a year by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Holding an additional session at the Junior High School would benefit students who couldn't attend the regular session, Roberts said. According to chairman Lynn Sutliff, the group's goals are to promote the welfare of young adults in the home, school and community, serve as a link between the school and the students’ homes and to provide activities, help build self-esteem and school spirit and encourage academic achievement for every teen. “We will ask the school officers to act as a student advisory committee and to serve on special project committees,” Sutliff said. The group discussed several special projects, including revamping the school store's stock and changing its hours, publishing a monthly newsletter, organizing a teachers’ hospitality committee and holding a student competition to design a school t-shirt, to be sold to students. Students may work either singly or in groups of up to four, with the top three shirt designs being SUPPORTING STUDENTS - embers 0 Lake-Lehman Junior High Sc ool’s newly formed Teens, Parents and Teachers group include, first row from left: Amy Healy, co-chairman Jan Elston, treasurer Trudi Steele, Carol Shaver, Linda Sorber, Helen Frank, Mlly Malpass, Barbara Lockman; second row: June McNulty, Judy Kasper, Mary Slaby, Barb Shaver, Martha Parise, Emily Sallitt, Kathryn Gregory, Sandy Weyman; back row: principal Robert O. Students may use the school library's computerized graphics program or work free-hand. The designers of the winning t- shirt will receive a free shirt and have their photo in the school's yearbook. Students also will write reports for the monthly newsletter and help out in the school store. All funds raised by the group will be used for activities in the Junior High School, Sutliff said. The organization adopted a set of by-laws and elected the following officers: Lynn Stuliff, chairman; Jan Elston, co-chairman; Donna DeCesaris, secretary; Trudi Steele, treasurer; Rose Lucarino newsletter coordinator; and Helen Frank and Joyce Birt, teachers’ hospitality committee. The teachers and students will form their own advisory committees, Roberts said. | | » silverware * unusual gifts * all major lines flatware * china * glassware and much more... 7) helen schwartz . . . gifts 300 Spruce St., Scranton 342-8241 or Call Toll Free: 1-800-637-8495 mh, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport YOUR HOMETOWN AIRPORT A DELTA USAiIr NEW YORK NEWARK PITTSBURGH US Aid PHILADELPHIA I NEAL TMORE ENPuEss WASHINGTON CHARLOTTE pls ATLATNTA UNITED EXPRESS’ Mm NEW Delta Airlines jet service direct to Atlanta — Nov. 1, 1992.
