CORA PORTER Corcoran Circle will meet Sept. 21 The Ruth Corcoran Circle of the Shavertown United Methodist Jamboree will raise funds for new Franklin Twp. fire truck By GRACE R. DOVE Post Staff Franklin Township Fire Company will hold its seventh “Country Music Jamboree” Sunday, September 20, to raise funds for a new fire truck. According to Assistant Chief Howard Jones, the all-volunteer fire company must upgrade its equipment to keep up with the growth in the township. “Our old pumper can handle only 750 gallons per minute, which really isn't adequate for the new, large homes being built in the township. We need a new pumper that can handle twice that amount,” Jones said. Since rural municipalities like Franklin Township don't have fire hydrants or nearby water sources, firefighters depend heavily on tankers and pumpers, Jones said. Firefighters need lots of water fast because the average home can burn to the ground in 15 minutes or less. Even if fire breaks out near alake or pond, often the fire trucks can't get close enough to take advantage of it, Jones said. “We need to raise a total of $150,000 to buy a completely outfitted, state-of-the-art new pumper,” Jones said. “So far we've raised nearly a third of that amount.” Jones said that the new pumper will replace the fire company’s original truck, a 1950 Chevrolet pumper, purchased new two years after the fire company was formed in 1948. The old Chevy won't be retired; Jones said that it can still be used for small fires and brush fires.
