DOVE Post Staff Lake-Noxen first graders made pillows from quilt squares and learned about the art of quilt making as part of their last R.I.F. (Reading is FUNdamental) book distribution. After reading Joyce Ray Laury's No Dragons on my Quilt, the story of a boy who is afraid of the dark and the special quilt with pictures of his favorite things that his grandmother makes for him, the children chose a pattern from the story and assembled their own quilt square. ‘Trucks, flashlights, clouds, the sun and rainbows were favorite motifs. PTA mothers sewed each square into a small pillow, to be stuffed and finished by the child who designed it. “Even the boys liked sewing their square together,” laughed first- grade teacher Lolly Larkin. Members of the Harveys Lake Women's Service Club visited the school to show the children how to assemble a full-size quilt, while several teachers brought in their quilts to show the children. “Every stitch in a quilt is an act of love,” explained first-grade teacher Mrs. Holmgren. The last R.I.F. (Reading is FUN- damental) books, displayed on three large quilts in the library, were ready for the children to se- lect. QUALITY HOMES INC.
