One program that has been initiated this year is the Stu- dent Assistance Program (ACT). The program consists of teachers and school stalf members who make their time available to help students through emotional, so- cial, and physical problems. The program is not designed to cure a student; it is designed to intervene and help a student through a dif- ficult situation. The ACT team has been trained to help students deal with a variety of problems ranging from peer pressure to eating dis- orders to suicide. The ACT team has also devel- oped various support groups that students can getinvolved in. There are four groups that are currently in operation. These groups con- sist of a group for children of di- vorce, children dealing with alco- holism in the family, Pupils At Risk (PAR) which helps students deal with academic or social problems, and a group for students who are recovering [rom the loss of a loved one. There are also two groups in development: a self-esteem and re- lationships group and a group for abused children. These groups provide a forum for students to share and discuss their experi- ences with students who have similar problems. The groups meet once a week and are facilitated by various fac- ulty members who devote their planning period to the group. The members involved were trained by Lee Rich, a certified Student Assis- tance Program team trainer, for one week at Luzerne County Com- munity College. The team also meets once a week to discuss the numerous problems faced by the students. During these times of mgny social and personal problemsj le Lake-Lehman School District has found one way to help students through the use of the Student As- sistance Program.
