Bill Bachman will be the program moderator. The forum will have a workshop format, with information on how to run for office available. “It's very difficult to get people involved in anything,” said David Sutton, aLehiman Township super- a : visor. “The majority likes to speak and the minority get involved. You look at the election turnout.” Besides being involved as a township supervisor, Sutton spent 20 years in the fire department. Despite the work involved, Sut- ton says that he enjoys being a Supervisor. For Ernest Ashbridge Jr., 20 years of experience on the Dallas School Board has been a reward- ing experience. “You gain a lot of knowledge and you get to know a lot of people,” said Ashbridge. “It’s rewarding in thatyou get to see the fruits of your labor. You get to see the schools change.” Besides his work on the school board, Ashbridge is also involved with the Back Mountain Library. “I think politics can be fun,” said Vernon. “I've been in elections where I've won, I've been in elec- tions where I lost. I think it should be considered an experience. If you lose an election, you're not a loser; you've learned something.” Vernon ran for school board in the 1960s when not many women were running and in a time when the Republican party picked its candidates. Vernon remembers being told that she would lose because she was a newcomer, a woman, and she was not chosen by the party. “I decided to run anyway and I won by a large margin. [ was even- tually the president of the school board,” said Vernon. After working as executive di- rector of the Family Service Asso- ciation, Vernon ran for state repre- sentative. “I came very close to winning. I consider that a victory,” said Ver- non. “That's what I think many people can dowhen they run. They have a platform and give people something to think about, whether you win or lose.” Co-sponsors of the forum are the Alumni Association of eh ship Wilkes-Barre and Penn State University. A hig “I think we have a good grou i ar” interested citizens,” said Vernon. “We have to find more.” Ai = fl — HL will recycle Christmas trees ne Harveys Lake Borough will be collecting Christmas trees and chip: | ils ping them to make mulch through the end of January.
