The Dallas Post 10 Dallas, PA Wednesday, September 18, 1991 Tie SDALLASCPoST Sports\Week ; LE 2 Mounts lose in final seconds, prep for Meyers this week The Dallas Mountaineers lost a non-league game in the final seconds .-last week, and now they must prepare for a tough match against Meyers “.September 21. .~ “Our kids played hard and I give them credit. They never quit,” said ‘Dallas Coach Ted Jackson after the Mountaineers 34-29 loss to Bishop ‘McCort of Johnstown. “They fought back when they were down two .touchdowns and played an excellent game in the second half to go in front 29-28. But we didn’t do very well in the first half,” Jackson said. .. “Welost the game inthe final 40 seconds, and our kids are still making -mistakes, especially on defense. They are young and their lack of .experience gets them in trouble on the field.” ~The Mounts face a high scoring Meyers team at home this week, and «Jackson says they need all the preparation they can get. “Our game this week is with Meyers at our field on Saturday,” said ‘Jackson. “Meyers has a good team and they are well coached. They are *. ‘big, strong and physical. It's going to be tough and we have a lot of work to do to get ready. I'm concerned about it. “The Mohawks throw the ball well and run the ball well and they are . good up front. They have some key players in Tucker, Labatch and ‘Heiser. Playing on grass instead of on the turf may or may not make a + difference. I'm sure they will be practicing on grass somewhere during + the week. I hope it makes a difference but you never know,” Jackson said The Mountaineers scored first against McCort, putting seven points - on the board in the first quarter on a two-yard run by Brian Burd and a good kick by Chris Williams. In the second quarter McCort scored two touchdowns, but before the ‘half ended Burd made a 92-yard run on a punt return to tie the score at 14-14 when Williams kicked the extra point. Before the quarter ended McCort moved the score to 21-14 when they ' scored from nine yards out. Midway through the third quarter Burd scored again when he went into the endzone from three yards out and Williams made the extra point to give Dallas another seven. Then Dave Fisher intercepted a McCort pass and took it to the 19-yard line which set it up for Burd's one yard «touchdown. Burd'’s option pass for a two-point conversion went to Jay .' Van Orden in the endzone and moved Dallas in front 29-28. McCort didn’t give up easily and with only 40 seconds left in the game Jeff Sotosky took the ball into the endzone from the one yard line to go «in front by the final 34-29 score. ‘Spencer runs wild in Take that Amy Shelley of Dallas unleashes a shot on goal during the Mounts RA ws match against Wallenpaupack September 14. Senior Chuck Finn scored one touchdown and Rich Lamoreaux scored another for the Knights. Finn also kicked four successful extra points to aid in the Knights 60-14 win. “The kids played very well,” said Coach Rich Gorgone. “They are starting to come around. Spencer is getting better every week and that’s what we need.” Gorgone thinks the Knights will need all of their skills against their next opponent. “We play Bishop Hoban this Saturday at home and they are going to be tough. The Argents are big and they are very physical. The only thing they are vulnerable to is the pass and unfortunately that is our weakest area. We have to get a lot of points on the board early if we want to win. They have a big line; they weigh about 240 lbs. We will have to count on our offense,” Gorgone said. “This week we have to work on our passing. The Argents have played a lot, doing good stopping the other team’s offense in the running game. The running game is our strong point,” said Gorgone. “We have our work cut out for us this week but we will be on the field fighting Saturday.” Lehman soccer team ecstatic at win over Dallas By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer Lake-Lehman’s new soccer coach Bill Tooley was as elated as his players last Wednesday when they defeated the Dallas soccer team 3-1. It was only the second time in 15 games that the Knights have beaten the Mountaineers. Dallas went on the scoreboard first when Ken/Chapple scored on a penalty kick in the third period. The Mountaineers continued to control the game until they were called for a penalty and Lehman's Brian Kelly took a free kick and put it past goal tender Justin Swain to tie the score. The Knights came to life after Kelly's score and a short time later Chris Salko put a rebound past Swain for the second goal and a 2- 1 lead for his team. Dallas Coach John McCafferty said he thought the momentum went back and forth during the first half. played well and Kelly in the middle of the field was beating my young halfbacks.” In the fourth period Dallas ral- lied and put on offensive pressure with Eric Ursiak having several chances to score but he couldn't get the ball in the cage. Ned Palka fired a straight shot from 22 yards out, but the ball hit the cross bar. Coach Tooley said he thinks he has a team that will go to the district playoffs and make it to the state playoffs. “Today we took care of Dallas, one of our major obstacles, until we meet them later in the season. Now we have to get by Wyoming Seminary.” McCafferty said his team is far from finished. “We have some young, inexperi- enced kids up front but their strength will come. It takes time. Wednesday's game was a good one but Lake-Lehman has to come to Dallas and play on our field. Our boys will have gained the experi- ence they need by that time,” McCafferty said.
