Drought devastates wildlife Luzerne County: The summer of 1991 will most likely be one of the driest onrecord. Adrought can have devastating effects on wild- life. During the month of July I have noticed numerous beavers killed on the highways where creeks flow under or near aroad and I had an increase of beaver complaints from people living in lakefront properties. It seems that many beavers were have a rough time surviving the low water conditions and were seeking deeper streams and lakes. Native brook trout and stocked trout were dying in some locations, and even the hardy bullheads succumbed to high water temperatures inshallow pools that were once deep ponds and lakes. - ~~ WCO Edward J.
