DENMON Staff Writer Troy Strauser of Harveys Lake is the first Back Mountain athlete to play on the East- West All-Star baseball team where he played second base. A graduate of Lake-Lehman High School in June, Strauser was one of four members of the Back Mountain Legion team who were candidates for the East-West game. Ray Russin, gSam Gorgone, and Neal Kaiser were the other three athletes After the game, he returned to the area to resume play with the Legion team which won the district playoffs and advanced to the regionals where the team “lost after the third game. “We finished as co-champi- ons with Hanover Area in the local league because we were ' tied and there was no time remaining to schedule a game Troy Strauser plays in state East-West game to break the tie. The coaches decided the teams should be co-champs,” said Strauser. Strauser played shortstop in high school and the team ad- vanced to state competition where it was defeated by Ha- nover. “I transferred to Lake- Lehman from Mississippi where I played baseball and I played for three years on the Knights varsity team for Coach Dwight Barbacci,” Strauser stated. Troy ended the season with -a .517 batting average, three varsity team advanced to the first round in district play. He also played on the varsity football team in his senior year as wide receiver and defensive back under Coach Rich Gor- gone. Troy is planning to attend Penn State Wilkes-Barre Cam- pus then transfer to the Main Campus or to Old Dominion in Denmon) Virginia. He plans to play base- ball in college. He said he likes football and basketball but believes he can go further in baseball. His goal is to some- day play in the major leagues. In his junior year at Lake- Lehman, Troy played in the Key- stone Games which he said helped him in competition and become a stronger player. He likes to ski but does not do much of it since he suffered a knee injury in football last season. Strauser stays in con- dition by running, weightlifting and playing racquet ball. Valenti leads nd round of ~4rem tourney A three day Club Championship Tournament is being held by the Irem Temple Ladies Golf Associa- tion at the Country Club. After completion of two rounds of play on August 13 and August 15, Sandy Valenti is leading the first flight with Marge Bryant as runner-up. Other results are: sec- ond flight, Esther Saba, first; Ar- #ne Rothstein, second; third flight, an Hee Koo, first; Jane Boltz, second; fourth flight, Reva Smulow- itz, first; Edith Jones, second. Dershimer played soccer #n Keystones Gretchen Ann Dershimer of Harveys Lake was among more than 6,000 Pennsylvania amateur athletes to compete in the 10th annual Keystone State Summer Games finals scheduled for Aug. 6-11, in the Greater Lehigh Valley. Dershimer was entered in the soccer competition, Junior Female Divison in the Pocono Region. Dershimer is a 9th grade stu- dent at Lake-Lehman High School She is the daughter of Gordon and Margaret Dershimer. NASCAR driver Jim Spencer will appear at fair Jim Spencer, NASCAR Driver will attend Luzerne County Fair on September 4. Jim's appearance will begin at 6 p.m. and he will spend a few hours signing autographs and meeting the general public. Jim Spencer is coming to our area by the efforts of Banquet Frozen Foods and supported by Shur Save Mar- kets, a Northeastern Pennsylvania Area youth at King’s camp Coach Ken Atkins conducted the initial week of his summer basketball day camp at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre. A capacity enrollment was on hand and a second week of camp is under way in Scandlon Gym for boys and girls from 9 to 17. Among key speakers in the first week were Ron Anderson of the 76ers and Bob Salmi, assistant coach of the New York Knickerbockers. King’s cage aides helping to direct the facility are Tony Konieski, Skip Milford and Noll Klank. The Bulls, who trailed by 11 points at halftime, switched to a tight man-to-man defense and slowly chipped away at the lead. Becky Yurko plays field hockey at Keystone Games Becky A. Yurko, of Kingston Twp,, participated in the 1991 Keystone State Summer Games, held recently in the Greater Lehigh Valley area. Yurko competed in the Scholas- tic Division of the Field Hockey competition for the Pocono Region. Yurko won a gold medal for placing first in team competition. Yurko will be a junior at Dallas High School and is the daughter of Emery and Maryann Yurko of Kingston Twp.
