(Photo by Ted Struthers) Big field of Comets in race The Harveys Lake Yacht Club held its weekly sailboat race on Sunday, Aug. 4. The air was calm to variable with five to seven knot breezes. The course was modified olympic in configuration with the elapsed time for the race of one hour and 34 minutes. Race chairman Frank Wadas was assisted by Ed Humphreys and Past Commodore Richard Garman. Two factors made this race particularly interesting: the lead changed hands nine times and it was the largest fleet of Comet sail- boats of the season. Local Big League Girls take By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer The District 16 Big League Girls, Softball team came within one game of winning it all in their first trip to the state tournament. After defeating District 23's Exton team 17-9 August 1 and losing 13-3 to Erie, District 16 came back to beat Erie 5-3 August 2 to advance to the state finals at Williamsport played August 3. The team made up of girls 16 to 18 years of age from the Back Mountain, Bob Horlacher and Northwest leagues entered the event for the first time this year. But three hit pitching by Wil- liamsports Beth Fausnaught stopped the local team cold as they lost the final game by a 13-1 score. In the August 1 game with Dis- trict 23, the local girls took a 17-9 win over Exton sparked by Mindy Main and Cherub Honeywell. Honeywell had a home run, two triples and collected six RBI's to keep the team in front of the Exton nine. Honeywell also picked up the win on the mound. The local nine advanced to the state finals by defeating Erie 5-3 with Karen Stefanowicz taking the win. She struck out seven and gave up only three hits. Leading at the plate were Br- idget Hozempa 3-for-4 and Stefancowicz with 2-for-3. second in state tournament The local girls lost in the final against a strong District 12 Wil- liamsport team with Cherub Hon- eywell starting and Stephanie Kriner coming on as relief. Hon- eywell gave up only four hits but walked seven in the second inning which proved to be too much for the local nine to overcome. D-16 scored their only run when Ann Faulls hit a single, stole sec- ond and scored when the Wil- liamsport second baseman made a throwing error on a fly to left field. Noelle Brooks and Honeywell each had a single, the only other two hits by the local team. Rec League playoffs on tap, Runnin’ Recsters take teen title Hard fought playoff action high- lighted last week's Fieldhouse/ Dallas Rec Basketball League. After the dust had cleared three teams were still alive and in the running for this summer's championship. The opening game was won by the Dominators 64-48 over Bilko's Bullets. Charlie Lamoreaux led the winners with 14 points while Mike Luksic had the same for Bilko's. The middle game saw the red hot Runnin’ Bulls dump the Silver Bullets 58-51. Once again Joe Flaherty was the leading scorer for the Bulls with 28 points. Preston Burroughs had 16 points for the Silver Bullets. The nitecap was the best game of the evening as the Fieldhouse nipped the Mounts 62-61 in over- time. Frank Debona and Paul Jobson had 16 points each for the winners while Jason Coslett poured in 27 for the losers including a thunderous slam dunk. The semifinals will be held this Wednesday at 6 p.m. with the Runnin’ Bulls tangling with the Dominators. The survivor of that game will take on the Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 6:30 p.m. for the championship. In the 12-16 year-old league, the Runnin Recsters clinched the championship with one week to go witha 51-22 thumping of the Bulls. Rich Butcofski continued his strong play for the winners with 18 points. Ed Thomas also had agreat game for the Recsters with 19. Brian Brady had 11 points for the Bulls now 2-3. The Bad Boys were awarded a forfeit over the Maver- icks in game two. Final game will be played this Thursday. DENMON Staff Writer The Back Mountain Legion team was eliminated from the regional playoffs August 1 when Green Ridge roared back from a 7-3 score to win 9-7 in the seventh inning of a game played at the Lackawanna County Stadium. Sam Gorgone was doing an excellent job on the mound until the seventh inning when Green Ridge erupted to score five runs and take an 8-7 lead. The Green Ridge team's Frank Tunis went to first on an error and Tom McDonald hit a single to put two on base. Mike Collins loaded the bases with a walk when Bob Franklin hit a two-run double. A walk to Tony Roberts again loaded the bases, then Chris Davis put his team in the lead with a three-run triple to the right field corner. Don James came in to relieve Gorgone in the seventh but by then the damage was done. The local team had advanced in the losers bracket Wednesday when they trounced Towanda 10- 2 with Todd Paczewski and Eric Pieczynski doing the mound work. Paczewski picked up the win for the Back Mountain team. Chuck Finn drove in two runs and Russin and Troy Strausereach scored twice. Neil Kaiser hit a two-run single for the team to aid in the scoring.
