DENMON Staff Writer Back Mountain Legion team defeated Hanover 8-4, July 22 behind pitcher Todd Paczewski to take the opening game in the play- offs. Paczewski gave up only four hits and struck out three in the seven inning game. The local nine took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Ray Russin hit a single, advanced ' tosecond when Pete Kerdesky took first on a walk and Russin scored “when Chuck Finn singled. Neil Kaiser drove in the next two runs with a double. Hanover scored a run in the top half of the second but the Back Mountain team put the game away in the bottom of the third when they scored five runs on awalk and five consecutive hits. Sam Gorgone took first on a walk and Kaiser followed with a single. Eric Pieczynski and Paczewski each hit run-scoring singles to give the Back Mountain a 5-1 lead then Jesse Sorber drove in two runs with a single moving the score to 7-1. Russin finished the inning with a single driving in arun and give the local team an 8- 1 lead. The Back Mountain played good defense turning in three double plays, the third one in the sixth inning when they stopped Ha- nover's three-run rally on double play from Russin to Pieczynski to Sean Shovlin. Russin went 3-for-3 at the plate and Kaiser had 2-for-3. The Back Mountain was sched- uled tomeet Greater Pittston Tues- day night, winner over Plymouth Monday. Back Mountain Legion lost 5-4 to the Greater Pittston team last Friday when the Pittston team broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning when a throw to pick off a runner on first base went into right field letting a man on second score the winning run. Pittston scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-1 lead over the Back Mountain. Undefeated Cardinals are Teeners champs The First Eastern Bank Cardi- nals won the Back Mountain Teeners Championship on Friday with a 10-3 win over the H.L. Pirates. The Cards ended the season with a perfect 13-0 record. The Cardinals defeated the Mer- chant Bank Brewers 9-6 to reach the playoff finals. The Pirates de- feated the A's 11-5 to reach the championship games. Ernie Chamberlain was the winning pitcher hurling all seven innings. He struck out one and only walked one, limiting the Pi- rates to just seven hits. Chamberlain was also the hit- ting star going a perfect 3 for 3 with three runs scored including an RBI triple. Eric Stogoski who played an excellent defensive game behind the plate also had three hits with two runs scored. Mike Petruska had a big 2-run single in the second inning. Shaun Kelly the Cards third baseman turned in a fine defensive effort and also clouted a triple. The Pirates were led by Brian Llwellyn who had two hits and Jeff Smith also was 2 for 3. Chris Traver chipped in with a hit after he went 4 for 4 against the Brew- ers included a 2-run homer. The Cardinals were coached this year by head coach Vince Stryjewski and assistants Mike Sholtis, Paul Malak and John Oliver. Game three featured a blister- ing performance by Joe Flaherty as he fired in a league season high 39 points in the Runnin Knights 84-66 win over the Silver Bullets. The Bullet now 0-4 were led by Karl Reiff's 26. In the 12-16 year-old League Rich Butcofski had 25 to pace the Runnin Recksters to a 52-33 win in Dallas Rec. Center League over the Bad Boyz, Jim Moran had 13 for the Boyz now 0-3. Game two saw the Mavericks go to 2-1 by dumping the previously unbeaten Bulls 68-51. George Marut and Ryan Clemm were a two-man wrecking crew as they teamed for 28 and 21 points re- spectively. Corey Cherup had 24 for the Bulls now 2-1.
