DENMON Staff Writer The Harveys Lake Pirates teener’s ran their record to 5-0 with two wins last week. The Pirates defeated the A's Monday by a 13-11 score. Will Woronko picked up the win pitch- ing six innings, walking 10 and striking out eight. Brian Llewellyn had three hits, one of them a double and Rick Matysik had two hits, one gaxlhem a base clearing double for fi RBI's for the Pirates. Ryan Picchi and Chris Traver each had two hits. Down 10-1 going into the fifth the A's rallied with eight runs. Davies and Alvarez hit key doubles and Brian Brady led the A's with two hits. The Pirates moved their record to 5-0 when they defeated the Brewers 13-9. Llewellyn came in to relieve Woronko and hurled four strong innings to get the win. He struck out six and gave up only two hits. Mike Adamshick and Picchi had two-run singles for the Pirates and Bob Sayre had a single and a hard hit triple. Jason Wilson and Jason Smith each had two hits. Scavone led the Brewers at the plate with 3:for-5 including a double and a triple and Jarrod Arovsia had 3-for-4 one of them a two-run double. Dr. Giddings sails to his first yachting win i Harveys Lake Yacht Club | h eld its regular weekly sailboat race on Sunday, June 16. The race, sailed in 15 to 18 knot winds, was M:angular modified gold cup with viidward and leeward legs. Race chairman, Frank Wadas of Shavertown, posted the following results: first place Dr. Lane Gid- dings and crew Stuart Josberger. This is the first time Dr. Giddings crossed the finish line before the rest of the fleet. Dr. Giddings has been a racing sailor for 35 years and is experienced in handling many types of sailboats. His vic- tory is made more important be- cause he edged out sailing master J#@: C. Barnes of Dallas. Becond place wentJack Barnes and crew Matt Lehman. Matt will leave shortly for Mayport, Florida where he will join the crew of the Destroyer U.S.S. John Hancock. Matt is a member of the NROTC and has had extensive experience in sailing 12 meter America's Cup Yachts at Newport, R.I. Third place: Dr. Richard Silberman and crew Rebecca Silberman. DENMON Staff Writer Three Lake-Lehman seniors received Student- Athlete awards at commencement exercises June 10 at the Edward H. Edwards Stadium. Samuel Gorgone and Megan Lukasavage were presented with the Pennsylvania Interscholasic Athletic Association (P.I.A.A.) awards given annu- ally to the outstanding academic male and female athletes. & ar: ‘Terry Martin was presented with the Lake- Lehman Coaches Student-Athlete Award in recog- nition for his performance in academic programs and in football, wrestling and track. Gorgone is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Gorgone of Shavertown, and was outstanding in all school activities. He was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated 11th in the senior class. He represented Lake-Lehman in DAR and at graduation also was the recipient of the Del Giber- son and Jay Zaleskas awards. He was named All-Scholastic in football in his senior year. Gorgone lettered in football for three years and was starting quarterback for the high school team in his junior and senior years. He also lettered in baseball for three years and was a pitcher and fielder on the varsity team in his junior and senior years. He was named as an All- Star in the Keystone All-Star Team and in his senior year was named MVP in the Fieldhouse Tournament. Gorgone will attend Millersville State University on a partial scholarship. Megan Lukasavage, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Lukasavage, was a member of the Lake- Lehman Chapter of the National Honor Society and was also the recipient of the Good Citizenship - Award, and a member of the Student Council. _.Sheexcelled in field hockey where she played left halfback and also lettered in girls soccer for the last two years. Megan also enjoys classical music, swimming and traveling to Canada and the southern part of the United States with her parents. She will attend LaSalle University but is unde- cided about her major. Terry Martin will attend East Stroudburg Uni- versity but is not certain what he will major in. The son of Alfred and Deetra Martin, Terry lettered for three years in football, playing varsity some of the time in his sophomore year and start- ing in his junior and senior years. He wrestled varsity from his sophomore year, finishing third in Districts in 10th grade, and placing second in Districts in his junior and senior years. Martin also lettered in track where he ran the 100m, 200m and 400m relay. He was also a member of the Luzerne County SADD organiza- , tion. LEGION TEAM MEMBERS . Chris Habrek had a 2 RBI triple, Jason Perlis had a 3 RBI triple and Justin Jumper homered to lead the Reds to clinch the National League crown. REDS 10 - PIRATES O JustinJumper, Jason Perlisand Ronny Sutton combined for a two hit shutout to lead the Reds over the Pirates 10-0. Josh Dukas and Jason Perlis had two hits apiece for the winners. DENMON Staff Writer Back Mountain Legion moved their record to 4-1 in the Legion League Saturday by defeating the Northwest-Benton team 2-1 in a game that went seven innings. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of six but after NW-Benton failed to score in the top of the seventh, Pete Kerdesky sent Neil Kaiser home on a sacrifice fly to give the Back Mountain team the win. Don James pitched all seven innings to pick up the win, giving up five hits, striking out six and walking five. Mike Siegfried was the losing pitcher for NW-Benton. ChuckFinnled at the plate with three hits and Ray Russin and Troy Strauser each had two hits. Earlier in the week, Back Moun- tain defeated Swoyersville 7-5, behind Don James who picked up the win when he relieved pitcher Sam Gorgone. James pitched 12/ 3 innings striking out two and walking one. Swoyersviile led 5-2 going into the top of the sixth when the Back Mountain team rallied to take the lead at 6-5. Todd Paczewski started therallyonawalk, Eric Pieczynski hit a single, then Chuck Finn singled in Paczewski. Jeff Sorber hit a sacrifice to advance the run- ners and Jeff Malak sent Pieczynski on a fielder’s choice. Finn scored ona single by Ray Russin and Troy Stauser went to first on a single before Sam Gorgone drove Russin in with a single to score the win- ning run. Chip Sorber is coach of the Legion team assisted by John Konopki. Last year the team won the league title with a 15-3 record but lost in the first round of the playoffs. Returning players this year are Russ, Kaiser, Strauser and Sorber. 12th annual Dallas Kiwanis All-Star game set for June 24 By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer The 12th Annual Dallas Kiwa- nis All-Star Softball Game will be played Monday, June 24, 6 p.m., on the Back Mountain Little League field, Church Street, Dallas. Bob Frodsham is chairman of the 1991 game assisted by planning com- mittee members Robert Dolbear, Tex Wilson and George McCutcheon. Two teams comprised of 18 senior girls chosen from the teams in the Wyoming Valley Softball League will be divided into the East and West teams. The East Division will be coached by Ha- nover Area coach Mike Kaminski, with Meyers Coach Ron Lloyd and Nanticoke Area's coach Gary Wil- liams as his assistants. ; The West Division will be coached by Bishop O'Reilly's coach Mike Twardowski, with Dallas coach Jay Pope and Wyoming Area coach Joe Bartell as his assis- tants.
