~~. UL CD dt PN ea. # 1 WW. (0 ed Lad SS Sd Vol. 102 No. 22 Wednesday, June 12, 1991 By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer Lady Black Knight Karen Stefanowicz made a name for herself in softball this season when she hurled her team- mates to a 13-2 record when she was on the mound. When the Knights started league play, Coach Roseann Ragnacci planned to have two pitchers to carry the mound duties - Cherub oneywell and Karen Btefanowicz, but it didn’t * work out that way. Cherub had some diffi- culty gaining control of her pitches and for most of the games Stefanowicz got the nod. Like Honeywell, Karen at first had some difficulty with control but managed to pull through each game and come up on the winning side. The Loyalville junior has played softball for 12 years. She started baseball at the age of six in the Harveys Lake League and played at several positions including outfield, catcher and third base. In eighth grade Karen started pitching at junior high but was not on the team mpintil she was in ninth grade ~hen she was a starting pitcher. In 10th grade she shared the mound with Hon- .eywell, then this year Karen turned out to be the starter. When Karen started she said Flossie Finn helped coach her in pitching and she stayed with Finn's coaching. .. “Sandy Dicton Boyle, Miss a and Kim Barbacci Shave also played a key role in my pitching,” said Karen. “I also attended various camps. sThey all told me try to get the peed and the control will ‘come. I guess they were right,” she said. In the games Karen pitched this season she had 123 strikeouts gave up 42 walks Karen Stefanowicz rang up 13-2 record for Lady Knights KAREN STEFANOWICZ in 96 2/3 innings for a 2.54 run average, but not all were earned runs, according to her coach. Karen also carried a big stick at the plate; her batting average for the season was .286. The two losses Karen had were to Berwick and to Wyo- ming Area, the latter in the playoffs for the District title. The game with Berwick went 10 innings and was tied when Karen went in as relief and lost. “I will be back next year and I hope to be even better,” said Karen. z Harveys Lake Yacht Club race results whe annual Black Diamond H¥adicap Sailboat Race was held at the Harveys Lake Yacht Club on Sunday June 9.
