10 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, May 22, 1991 Rumble strips finally filled On May 15, a crew from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) filled the rumble strips on Route 309 at the intersection with Route 415 in Dallas. The strips were installed in February, 1990 and immediately drew protests from motorists and nearby businesses because of the noise they created and the damage they might cause to a car's suspension. PennDOT agreed to fill the strips after Dallas Borough installed a warning light to alert drivers to the intersection. (Post Photo/Rich Johnson) Recycling (Continued from page 1) tues. I was firs. made aware last week of Mr. Medico’s assessments and I took them seriously. I looked into the situation thoroughly and conferred with municipalities and other agencies. “I can only comment on the legal aspects of Mr. Medico's assess- ment. I would suggest a better forum would be the Luzerne County Court. DAMA is a Pennsylvania general municipal authority and as such may take on other com- munity services. Jones also stated that subse- quent documents submitted by the municipalities in February, 1991 were very specific in authorizing the authority to engage in solid waste and recyclable materials. “Under Act 109 the municipali- ties charged DAMA with the solid waste collection and recyclables collection. I have reviewed at length all ramifications of uie program and I believe it can be implemented with no problem. I assure you the motion to award the bid to Danella conditioned on the enactment ofa contract with the three munici- palities and contingent on the passage of their ordinances is in order.” Medico said he had never re- ceived the documents submitted to DAMA by the municipalities in February of this year and had seen only the first one. Plant manager Thomas Bagley obtained copies of the documents and gave them to Medico at the meeting. Glancing over them quickly, Medico stated, “I still believe you are required to negotiate a contract and believes DAMA's actions are illegal.” Joseph Youngblood, chairman of the solid waste and recyclables collection committee, moved that DAMA in accord with the April 11 bids give Danella Environmental Technologies the contract award on condition that a contract be signed between DAMA and the three municipalities and in addi- tion a contract be enacted between the municipalities and Danella. Chairman of the DAMA board, R. Spencer Martin stated, “We appreciate the arguments and concerns but we have done vari- ous studies and gave it much thought and we are about to take action.” Board member Robert Dickin- son said, “The board has given-a great deal of thought to this pro- gram and had to vote the way we felt best,” as he referred to the board’s unanimous vote in favor of awarding the contract. 1010) By W: (8 A/T} 101 N. Riders from the Wyoming Valley met in Ed- wardsville early Sunday morning and had a police escort out of the area. “This is good clean fun,” said Barry Yelen, who organized the local riders. “Everyone here is out for a leisurely ride and we are also raising money for charity, so you can see there is nothing wild about it.” Yelen heads the Venture Touring Society, which is a riding club that takes tours and rides all over the area. During the past few years Yelen and the club have taken part in the Geisinger Ride, but when the turnout from the Wyoming Valley increased he began to organize the depar- ture for all area riders. “Russ Major . (of Trucksville) contacted me and told me that there was a lot of interest in this year’s ride so we decided to do something about it,” said Yelen. Major and his wife, Shirley, were next to the Yelens as the group that headed to Danville. “We love to go riding and this gives us another reason to get out,” said Shirley Major. “It is also nice to see all these riders coming out and raising money for charity.” Other Back Mountain riders included Dennis McCartney of Harveys Lake. McCartney took his eight-year-old son Michael along for the ride. “We go riding quite often,” said McCartney. “We even have a microphone set so we can talk to each other along the way.” Michael seemed excited about the ride and said that he wanted to have a motorcycle himself one day. “It's fun, I like it a lot,” he said. Another father and son combination taking part in the ride were John and James Broken- shire of Harveys Lake. “We really like riding,” said John. “and you can’t find a better way to relax.” : Last year, the elder Brokenshire said he put nearly 11,000 miles on his motorcycle. “That included a pretty bad accident that put me out of commission for a while,” he said. James Brokenshire likes riding his motor- cycle with his father. “This is the third year I've been on this tour,” he said. “The last two years I rode on the back with my dad and this is the first year I'll be riding myself and I'm looking forward to it.” The riders had beautiful weather to make the trip and it proved successful as organizers say that nearly $35,000 was raised during the day.
