Dr. Karen Boback, chairman of the Education Committee, pre- sented the students with key chains during award ceremo- nies at the club’s second annual “Community Night”. Dr. Boback said, “These stu- dents are fine examples of aca- demic accomplishment and we are proud to present them into the Harveys Lake community. We join our community leaders and our families who are pres- ent tonight in admiration and applaud the excellence which they have achieved. Also, we .|. congratulate their parents and admire their skill in parenting and hope to do as well our- selves.” Recipients of the awards are: Christopher R. Tawes, son of Gary L. and Margaret Y. Tawes of Dallas. He is a member of the Honor Society, Who's Who . saAmong High School Students (and a Commended Student of the National Merit Scholarship. He is a peer counselor and plays volleyball. He has received a scholar- ship to Weslyn College in Vir- ginia, where he plans to major in English and Philosophy. His occupational goal is to become a teacher, writer and philoso- pher. Michelle Richardson is the daughter of ThomasV. and Faye C. Richardson of Shavertown. Michelle is the 1990 recipient of the Bausch and Lomb Science Award, Xerox Humanities /So- cial Sciences Award, and the -|- Luzerne County Science Teach- ers’ Outstanding Science Stu- dent Award at Lake-Lehman. Billington is the daughter of James J. Borton of Harveys Lake and Lynn F. Carr of Honesdale. Ms. Billington has been named to Who's Who Among American High School Students and the National Sen- ior Honor Society. She participates in varsity track and field and is a three- year letter winner in the 800m run, 3200m relay, 1600m relay and the 400m run. She is also active in varsity volleyball, row- ing and is president of a church youth group. Among her char- itble work is the Crop Walk for Hunger, Youth Allocation Com- ‘mittee for the United Way and missionary work in New Hamp- shire. For four years he received a scholarship to sports camp in Lee, Massachusetts. After gradu- ation, Mr. Vigorito plans to enlist in the U.S. Army and then pur- sue a colelge education with a major in History and Philosophy. Christopher J. Kocher, is the son of Harold E. and Barbara P. Kocher of Dallas. He has been named to Who's Who Among American High School Students, the National Honor Society, the JETS/TEAMs test participant and the Science Olympiad. He is a member of the LCCC Fencing Club and participated in an International Exchange Stu- dent Program in Mexico. Senior High School and Lake- * Lehman High School participated in Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre. Junior Leadership Wilkes- rre, a community-wide leader- : ‘Qaip program for high school ' sophomores, juniors and seniors, « conducted its fourth program year . which consisted of six day-long * seminars. During the course of the « year, program participants at- tended workshops that focused on: leadership skills; the media; human services; business and industry; the justice system and the environment. The students also selected a project and worked in groups to develop a formal presentation which was given at a recent public forum. This year's projects focused on economic development; the elderly; the right to die; education; recycling and recreation for handi- capped children. Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre was the first organization of its kind in Pennsylvania and only the eighth in the nation when it was formed in 1987. Higher Education Assistance Agency. He played defensive back and quarterback, outfield in baseball and is a member of the Ski Club. He has participated in the Gifted Program at Lake-Lehman and has received advance college credit for courses at Penn State W-B Campus this year. After graduation Mr. Gouger plans to attend the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science where he has received the Trus- tee's Scholarship. His career goal is a Doctoral Degree in Pharma- cology. Jason Gearhart is the son of Larry and Jean Gearhart of Hun- lock Creek. He is a member of Who's Who Among High School Students, the Honor Society, the Gifted Program at Lake- Lehman and was awarded the Youth Salute of Wyoming Val- ley. He is an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, a volley- ball letterman and president of the United Methodist Youth Fel- lowship. Mr. Gearhart has re- ceived the Pa. Fish Commission Conservation Award and Pa. Bureau of Forestry Conserva- tion Award.
