Dallas eighth graders adopt U.S. servicemen Like many students across the country, students in Mrs. Williams’ eighth-grade English classes at Dallas Middle School wanted to make the holidays a little brighter for those U.S. servicemen who would be spending the holidays away from home because of Operation Desert Shield. Five members of the armed services who were former graduates of the Dallas School Dsitrict were adopted by the classes, who sent them cards and letters, as well as small personal gifts and a Dallas Mountaineer’s tee-shirt. The personal link between the students and the alumni service personel helped students relate more strongly to events in the Middle East, according to their teacher, and fostered a personal interest in the five adoptees, who included Navy nurse Lisa Williams, reservist Steven Carr and Jeffery White, Jonathan Mitchell and Peter Williams, members of the standing services.
