14 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, October 31, 1990 SPORTS Mounts hang tough before loss to Hanover By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer Hanover’s 21-13 win over the Dallas Mountaineers wasn't as easy as many people expected. Hawkeye coach AlKopacz said that the game was the toughest Hanover had played all season. Dallas Coach Ted Jackson agreed hat the game was a tough one. “Our kids played well in the second half,” said Jackson. “They made some fundamental mistakes in the first half and we beat our- selves. In the second half the kids played hard, well enough to win. Hanover is a big team and they're ~ tough. “I'm proud of them, they never gave up. They didn’t win but Ha- nover didn't run away with them either,” Jackson said. It looked as though the Hawkeyes would run away with the game in the opening quarter when they intercepted Dallas quarterback John Morris’ pass on the Mountaineers first drive and Kevin Proctor went 48 yards two plays later for a touchdown. The kick was good and the Hawkeyes took a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter Hanover scored a second touchdown to go ahead 14-0. Dallas looked like a different team when they came out in the second half. Their attitude showed their determination to stop the Hawkeyes and they did. In the opening play Hanover fumbled and Dallas recovered but the Mountaineers were unable to score and had to punt. Again Hanover fumbled and Mountain- eer Jeremiah VanOrden took the ball into the endzone for a touch- down for the Mountaineers. Chris Williams kicked the extra point and the score was 14-7. ~ Eric Paczewski intercepted Quarterback Eric Pearson's pass on Hanover's next possession and on the next play John Morris hit VanOrden for a 17-yard touch- down pass. Williams kick was blocked and the score was 14-13. . The Hawkeyes defense stopped the Mountaineers on drives in the fourth period but Hanover scored their final touchdown with less than five minutes remaining in the game. Jamie Proctor’'s kick was good. The game ended 21-13 when Dennis Monk intercepted Morris’ pass on the final drive of the game. Dallas plays Bishop Hoban at home Saturday afternoon. Last year the Mountaineers dropped the championship game, but this year the Mountaineers came out strong and battled toa 3- 2 win over Wyoming Seminary to capture the championship. Eric Ursiak scored the first goal for the Dallas soccer team unas- sisted only 3:20 into the game at the Dallas field. It was on the same field where . last season the Mountaineers lost in an overtime match. This year the Mounts were determined to pick up a win on their home field at least three times in The Dallas Post remembering their coach's state- ment that “You never lose on your home field.” Pat Morris gave his team a 2-0 lead at 9:15 of the first period when he scored on an assist from Matt Sleightholm’s kick. Both teams played midfield for most of the game but Dallas took control and the Blue Knights were stymied because their entire game plan keys around the midfield while Dallas's doesn't. Ursiak, in the final minute of the third period, took control of the ball after Ted Palka missed a header and put in a 20 yard grounder for a third goal for the Mountaineers. With only 1:25 in the game remaining, Seminary’s Willie Kozicki scored on a penalty kick but the Mountaineers defense ; killed the time left on the clock and celebrated a great victory. Dietterick (continued from page 1) this month Dietterick was found guilty on all 19 charges of fraud and forgery. Following the conviction, Di- etterick tried to have his name taken off the election ballot but a state court ruled that it was too late to have the name removed. Some GOP leaders feel that there are many scenarios which could occur if Dietterick is re-elected. They include: eDietterick is elected and the House of Representatives votes to allow him to serve. eDietterick wins his appeal in court and is allowed to serve. Malonis picks eight of ten, eDietterick is re-elected and the House of Representatives votes to not allow him to serve, in which case a special election could be called. Other observers believe that such an outcome would mean no representation for the distict, since the Democrat-controlled House would be reluctant to call a special election in the heavily Republican district. Either way, GOP leaders feel that strong voter turnout will help Dietterick win the election. “If everyone come out to vote we'll be in good shape,” said Reese. and wins football contest Chris Malonis of Dallas correctly picked eight of the ten games in the weekly football contest and that was good enough for the win.
