(Post Photo/Charlotte Bartizek) ai] Tie breaker helps Cherup win weekly football contest Once again, and for the third time this season, the Dallas Post/Treat Pizza football contest came down to the tie breaker. This week Corey Cherup of Dallas was the closest in the tie breaker and was declared the winner of two pizzas from Treat Pizza in Dallas. Things were tough in the competition this week as there were a lot of close games, a couple upsets and a few that could have gone either way. Cherup made a strong showing in the High School and Pro sections of the contest to correctly pick six of the games. That put him in a tie and he was only four points off in the tie breaker, so he got the win and will get the pizzas. Not too many contestants predicted the Pittston Area win over Lake- Lehman last Friday and very few pictured the Dallas Cowboys to beat the Tampa Bay Buccanneers on Sunday. Games in this week's contest may be just as exciting and fun to | predict. Anyone can enter, and the one to pick the most games correctly will enjoy two pizzas from Treat Pizza. Make sure you fill out the entry form on below and cheer on your teams. : Lake-Lehman Sports Roundup Soccer will make playoffs Division 1-A Dallas boys soccer team hung on to their division title Friday when they defeated the Lake-Lehman Knights 2-0 sparked by Ned Palka’s late first period kick 25 yards into the goal. Palka scored after the Mountaineers had two close misses. Mountaineer Andy Flint missed a second goal for Dallas when he hit a header off the goal cross bar. Brian Fett scored a second goal for Dallas on a penalty kick with only seconds remaining in the game. The loss knocked the Knights out of a Division 1 playoff but they will qualify for the District 2 tournament. Coughlin with a 9-6 record took the final Division 1 playoff spot to meet Wyoming Seminary this past Monday in the first round of play in Division 1. Winner of that game will meet Dallas (Wednesday) today. Earlier in the week the Black Knights defeated Wallenpaupack 6-0 to improve to 8-6 in Division 1 and a chance for a playoff spot if they were able to defeat Dallas Monday. Ken Miroslaw scored the first goal for Lake-Lehman off an assist by Jason McDade in the first period. Brian Kelly added two goals in the second period and Tim Norconk added a fourth. In the third period Norconk scored another goal unassisted and Marlatt off an assist by Stogoski scored the sixth and final goal in the game. Field hockey takes second in district Lake-Lehman Lady Knights clinched second place in the District AA playoffs last Wednesday with a 2-1 win over Wallenpaupack when they scored two goals in the second half to take a 2-0 lead. Trudy Wandel scored the first goal to break a scoreless tie on an assist by Michelle Naugle and Jen Cross scored the second assisted by Jo Halowich. At 23:44 into the final half, Amy Malti pulled Wallenpaupack within one point of the Lady Knights when she scored on an assist by Julie Ingvaldsen. Black Knights drop 2nd consecutive game By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer Lake-Lehman coach Rich Gor- gone blamed his team's loss to Pittston Friday on the damage done to his players a week earlier by a tough Hanover team. “We were concerned going into Friday night's game with Pittston,” said Black Knights Coach Rich Gorgone. “Pittston is a good team, they have a good quarterback and they have some big people. We expected a tough time. Our kids were worn out from Hanover be- cause they were ahard-hitting team and the Patriots are the same kind of team as Hanover. We had too much too quick. “After last Monday's game with Hanover, we really had only two days to get ready. The rain took away one day and Tuesday our kids were like the walking wounded.” “We had our chances with Pittston but we didn’t take advan- tage of them. The first half was was the last quarter that killed us,” Gorgone said. The Patriots took a 7-0 lead late in the third period but Dave Oatridge came right back in the final quarter and the Knights went in front 8-7. Then the Knights made a couple of mistakes and in the final minutes of the game the Pa- triots scored twice, one of the scores coming after they recovered a Knight fumble on the Knights own 10-yard line. “The kids were worn out,” said Gorgone. In the last of the second half I was taking them off the field about seven or eight times. I'm not making excuses for the loss be- cause Pittston is a good team, but anytime you move up a level you've got to be concerned. “We have Nanticoke this week and we have to get the kids ready. The kids have to put Hanover behind them and look ahead to Nanticoke, Crestwood and Dallas. Nanticoke is a well-coached team; we've got to get the kids ready and evenly played and it ended 0-0. It see what happens.” Dallas Post/Treat FOOTBALL GONTEST *Win two large pizzas from Treat Pizza* Rules for the football contest 1) Each week in The Dallas Post a football contest entry form will be published. 2) Contestants must circle the team which they think will win in the respective games.
