Rooted in their Christian faith, Chamboni- ers refused to give into the Nazi's, risking persecution and death for turning their simple mountain vil- lage into a sanctuary. Pierre Sauvage, director of “Weapons of the Spirit,” returned to Le Chambon, his birthplace, intending to produce a film about the Allied decision not to bomb the railroad tracks leading to Auschwitz. Instead, Sauvage de- cided to recreate the story sur- rounding the Le Chambon sanctu- ary which he calls, “The conspir- acy of goodness”. During inter- views Sauvage conducted for back- ' ground to the film, he asked the old villagers why they risked their lives giving safe harbor to the Jews. An elderly villager replied, “It's a normal thing to do”. “Weapons of the Spirit” is being hailed coast to coast by critics as the film about the Holocaust which depicts the spirit and optimism during the world's dark time. Desomond Ryan of the Philadel- phia Inquirer writes, “...a film bulging with profound questions of morality, responsibility and re- ligion.” Tickets may be purchased for the 5:30, 7:30and 9:15 p.m. show- ings of “Weapons of the Spirit” at the Book and Record Mart, South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, The Jewish Community Center, South River Street, Wilkes-Barre, and the Tudor Book Shop, Wyoming Ave., Kingston. Tickets may also be purchased through the Interfaith Resource Center at 68 South Fran- klin Street, Wilkes-Barre, across from the Osterhout Library. Cost is $5.00 per ticket for all showings. All proceeds benefit the Interfaith Resource Center. The Interfaith Resource Center for Peace and Justice serves the community through presentations, a resource library, co-sponsors films, and speakers which enrich and educate the area on current interfaith issues.
