Born Oct. 24, 1908, in Luzerne, she was the daughter of the late William and Florerice Weaver Banta. She resided in Shavertown for many years. She was an active member of the Ebenezer Baptist ~ Church, Plymouth, where she served as a deaconess. She also taught child evangelism classes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude, in 1987; brother, Elmer; sisters, Mary Jane Jones and Mabel Bantell. Surviving are sons, Claude T., Shavertown; William, Waverly; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchil- dren; brother, Willard, Tunkhan- nock; sisters, Eleanor Barnard, Luzerne; Dorothy Janosky, Shav- ertown; several nieces and neph- ews. Funeral services will be Wednes- day, 11 a.m., from the Williams Funeral Home, 114 W. Main St., Plymouth, with Rev. Dr. E.D. Het- tinger, pastor emeritus of the Ebenezer Baptist Church and the Rev. Michael Wilmoth, of the Fel- lowship Baptist Church, Shaver- town will officiate. Interment will be in Memorial Shrine Cemetery, Carverton. AMBROSE W. WEST Ambrose W. West, 80, of 83 Grandview Ave., Dallas, died May 12 at his home in Forty Myers Beach, Fla. ~ He was born in Ashley, the son of Walter and Anna Blackwell West, educated in the Ashley schools, with special training at General Motors and Ford Motor Co.; and was well known in the automotive industry of the valley, retiring in 1973 from David Ertley, Inc. ‘He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the 843rd Ord- nance Co., serving in Africa, Italy and France, and belonged to the American Legion of Dallas; the Eagles of Hazleton and was a life member of the Berwick Elks and Berwick Moose. OndJuly 11,. he and his wife, the former Leila Mench of Berwick, would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Ruth Schneider, Wilkes- Barre; a niece, Mrs. Shirley Cava- naugh, Wilkes-Barre; nephews, Allan Schneider, Reistertown, Md.; Richard Schneider, Mifflinville; and Eric Schneider, Rochester, Mich. A memorial service will be held on July 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Hanover and Lockhart Streets, Wilkes-Barre, with interment in the family plot in Pine Grove Cemetery in Berwick, at a later date. BERTHA HORNYAK Mrs. Bertha Madden Hornyak, 126 Church Street, Edwardsville, died July 7, 1990, at the General Hospital in Wilkes-Barre where she had been a patient for the past three weeks. The former Bertha Gossart of Harveys Lake, she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Mary Pemble- ton Gossart. She was a resident of Pringle Hill for many years and was a member of St. Mary's Byzan- tine Catholic Church in Kingston and the Harveys Lake American Legion Auxiliary No. 967. Her first husband, Anthony Madden Sr., and her second husband, Emil Hornyak, both preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were sons, Anthony Jr. and James and daughter, Alberta Rembish. Surviving are children, Mrs. Julie Raineri and Mrs. Ann Cox, both of Wilkes-Barre; Theresa Androcklitis, Ashley; Dee Madden, Kingston; and Dr. Emil Hornyak, Texas; 28 grandchildren; 16 great- grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Pat Uzdella, Harveys Lake; Faith Keene, Florida; nieces and neph- ews. Interment was in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Pringle. CHARLES PARMELEE Charles Parmelee, 92, of Howell Road, Shavertown, died July 3, 1990, at his home, following a lengthy illness. Born in Mexico, N.Y., he was the son of the late Edmund J. and Mary Tourot Parmelee. He was formerly employed by the Under- writers Association of New York State. In 1939, he joined the Penn- sylvania Millers Mutual Insurance Co. of Wilkes-Barre, retiring in 1963 as its Executive Vice Presi- dent and Secretary. He continued to serve on the company’s Board of Directors until 1975. He had re- sided in Shavertown for many years and had also formerly maintained a residence in Port St. Lucie Fla., for many years. An avid golfer, he had scored a hole-in-one at the Lehman Golf Club. Surviving are his wife, the for- mer Rose Besancon; son, Charles M. Forty Fort; two grandsons; one great-grandson. Interment was in Fern Knoll Burial Park, Dallas. FRANK STELLA Frank H. (Pepo) Stella, formerly of Exeter and West Pittston, died July 4, 1990, at the Meadows Nursing Home, Dallas. Born in Browntown, Pittston Township, he was the son of the late Harry and Julia Catani Stella. He was a member of St. Anthony's Church, Exeter. Surviving are sisters, Mrs. De- lores Salvatore, Keystone section of Plains Township; Mrs. Rose- mary Rosetti, Charlotte, N.C.; Mrs. Rena O'Dell, Larksville, Interment was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. JOHN MAHLE John Mahle, of RR 2, Dallas, Meeker, died July 9, 1990, at his home. Born in Forty Fort, he was the son of the late Frederick and Sarah Roland Mahle. He resided at Meeker for the past 30 years. He was employed as a machinist for Medico Industries, Forty Fort for seven years, and at R&H Machine Shop for 12 years, retiring 18 years ago. Surviving are his wife, the for- mer Betty Raver; sons, John Jr., Dallas; Frederick, Dallas; Richard, Bound Brook, N.J.; David, Har- veys Lake; stepchildren, Donald Raver, North Plainfield, N.J.; Char- les Raver, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Shirley Hummer, Plains; 13 grand- children; 12 great-grandchildren. He had resided in Mercerville for the last 18 years. Before moving to New Jersey, he was employed by state Sen. T.N. Wood as the manager of his Harveys Lake estate for 29 years. Williams told Officer Elliot Ide he was talking with his niece and not paying attention when he ran oft the vod, Officer Ide was pusisted by Dal- las Borough Police Department, Dallas Ambulance, Medic-One, Kingston Township Police and Rescue Unit, Kunkle Ambulance and Geisinger Life Flight who air- lifted the injured girl to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville where she will be hospitalized for at least two months. Mrs. Williams extended her sincere appreciation to Fred Rosen- crans, Lower Demunds Road, ks rescuer Delle ‘who saved her daughter's life byrapplying pressure to a sev- ered artery in the child's arm stop- ping the bleeding. “The police said Jennifer would have bled to death if Rosencrans had not been at the scene,” Mrs. Williams said. “He will probably be nominated for the Carnegie Award.” Stephen Williams was charged with driving under the influence and driving with his license sus- pended. Police report DALLAS BOROUGH HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT IN SHOPPING CENTER On July 3, Rita J. O'Donnell, Dallas, reported to Dallas Borough police that her 1988 Merkur was struck in the right front by a car backing out of a parking space at the Dallas Shopping Center. Kath- leen O'Donnell, driver of the Merkur, told police that a female who refused to leave her name told her a white female driving a light colored car backed into the vehicle and then left the scene. Attempts to contact the person to whom the hit and run vehicle is registered have not been successful to this point. Officer James Drury is the investigating officer. CHARGED WITH SHOPLIFTING AT ACME Officerdames Drury investigated a retail theft June 30 where Joan E. Bogardus, Dallas, alias Joan E. Tregaskis, was seen by an em- ployee of Acme Market, Shaver- town putting items into her purse. The employee stated that the ac- cused paid for some items but tried to leave the store with items in her purse valued at $68.00. The accused was cited for retail theft. KINGSTON TOWNSHIP HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT IN TRUCKSVILLE On July 4, Officer Ziegler inves’ tigated a hit and run accident on Lehigh Street, near Division Street, Trucksville, where a Buick Regal owned by Ann M. Stone, Trucksville, was parked in front of her residence when sometime be- tween 1 and 7 p.m., a light blue vehicle struck the Buick on the passenger's side and left the scene. Traces of light blue paint were found on the Buick. CYCLE ACCIDENT Officers . Robert Parrish and Walter Davis were dispatched to an accident on Bunker Hill Road where they found the operator of a motorcycle, unconscious on the road about 30 feet from where he evidently lost control. Investiga- tion concluded that the motorcycle was traveling north on Bunker Hill and when rounding the curve, he ran off the roadway into a shallow ditch and went out of control coming to rest about 30 feet up hill from the impact area. VANDALISM REPORTED Officer Robert Parrish investi- gated a case of vandalism at the residence of William Connors, 248 Meadowcrest where someone did an estimated $20 damage to the front doors. WINDOWS STOLEN FROM BUILDING SITE Officer Robert Parrish investi- gated the theft of 12 brown alumi- num windows made by King Win- dow Company, valued at $5,000 from property at 1045 Lantern Hill Road, Woodridge II, where a new home is under construction for William Umphred by developer Leo Rutkoski. ‘DALLAS TOWNSHIP GUN, KEYS STOLEN Warren Dailey of Dallas, July 2, reported the theft of a gun to the police. He told police that someone removed a stainless steel A. M.T. 22 Magnum and a set of car keys and house keys from behind the seat of his pickup truck which was in the garage. Items were valued at $212. Officer Elliot Ide was the investigating officer. TIRES SLASHED Diane O'Donnell, Swoyersville, reported to police July 4, that while parked in front of her mother’s home in Dallas, three tires on her 1976 Nova were slashed. THEFT, VANDALISM AT VALLEY VIEW Jerome Lambert, Dallas re- ported to Dallas Township Police that someone entered and removed from his mobile home at Valley View Trailer Park, between June 12 and June 19, a washer, dryer and air conditioner, and also damaged the home. CYCLE STOLEN George Amader of Dallas, June 30 reported to police that someone stole a 1988 Suzuki which had been chained to a three-wheeler in his garage. ITEMS STOLEN FROM GLENDALOUGH HOME Dallas Townhip police investi- gated a burglary at Glendalough Road, Dallas, July 3, where entry was made through a ‘doggie’ door in the front door. LAKE CATALPA ROAD HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT On June 30, Officer Elliot Ide was dispatched to an accident on Lake Catalpa Road, where he re- ported that Brenda Hoyt, Free- man’s Trailer Court, Dallas, was traveling west on Lake Catalpa Road in a Pontiac when a truck traveling east on Lake Catalpa Road crossed over into the west lane and struck Hoyt's car. Hoyt said after the impact the driver got out of the truck and asked “What are you doing in my lane?’ Hoyt said he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and he and his passen- ger jumped into the truck and left the scene of the accident.
