oT ar / The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, July 11, 1990 13 SPORTS Both local Little League teams win Back Mountain Nationals con- tinued to advance after Monday by defeating Northwest 6-5 when they scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning and held down North- west. The Nationals were behind 5-4 going into the sixth inning but homeruns by John Oliver and pitcher Richard Klick put them in front 6-5. Klick held the Northwest in the bottom of the inning to gain ‘the win. He struck out 11 and gave up only three hits. Kevin McDonald and J. Perlis drove out doubles, McDonald's double good for two runs. The Back Mountain Americans continued alive in their bracket by trouncing Luzerne-Courtdale- Pringle 12-3 behind Tim Klimek's three-hit pitching. Ted Jackson knocked out a pair of doubles and J.P. Cosgrove had two hits, one of them a double and picked up three RBI's. Mike Hoover had two RBI's and M. Bailey drove out a deep triple. July 4th Lake Yacht Club race results Three sailboat races were held at the Harveys Lake Yacht Club on July 4. The races were held in heavy, gusty, 15 to 25 knot winds, full sun and in the presence of many motorboats. The course was a modified Gold Cup, twice around. The first race, the Annual July 4 Handicap was won by Capt. Frank Wadas and crew Dave Hoffman; second place, Capt. Jack Barnes and crew Char- les Wasserott V; third place, Dr. Richard Silberman, 4th place; Capt. Matt Lehman and 5th place, Doug Stevens. The Comet Series was won by Capt. Frank Wadas and crew, Dave Hoffman; 2nd place, Capt. Jack Barnes with Charles Wasserott, V crew. “~The Phantom Race was won by Dr. Richard Silberman in spite of capsizing twice; 2nd place, Matt Lehman; 3rd, place, Doug Stevens. Mechanical problems prevented Joann Post from finishing. Athletics capture Teeners title The A's started the second half with a 9-5 win over the Dodgers and extended their winning streak to seven. Jason Davies got the win in relief. Andy Flint got two hits as Randy Slaff tripled and Brian Brady and Chris Williams doubled. Pat Joyce tripled for the Dodgers. The streak ended at seven as the Brewers beat them 10-5 with a 5-run seventh. Baraski got the victory after relieving Shawn Sca- vone. The Yankees kept the A's in a tailspin as they won 4-0. Todd Paczewski allowed only a single to Flint in the first and a double to Slaffin the seventh with nothing in between. The Astros took the A’s 8- 1 as the slide continued. The team rededicated itself to the season, and came out witha 16 hit barrage against the Cardinals in a 13-2 victory. Slaff collected four hits with Williams and Brady getting three apiece. Davies pounded a bases loaded double to drive in all three and break the game open in the fourth. Noel ‘Alvarez won his fifth game and helped his own cause with a two- run homer in the first. In the season finale against Beaumont, Alvarez pitched a one- hitter and led the A's to a 7-3 win, and a regular season champion- ship. Chris Ball took the loss but struck out 12 yielding only one walk. Slaff crashed a triple in be- tween two singles. Davies got a double and a triple for three RBI's. Brady also ripped two hits for the A's. A's manager Randolph Slaff explained, “These kids were win- ners all along. They just needed to be told what it took, what to do, and do they did.” Keith Schultz leads Legion to win Back Mountain Legion's Keith Schultz hurled a six-hitter and drove out a two-run homer to lead in six run fourth inning to give his team an 12-2 win, besting Tunkhannock pitcher Mike Schultz who pitched three and two-thirds -innings, striking out two and walk- ing six. Mike Schultz also hit a hom- erun, a double and a single and knocked in two runs. Mike Strutko went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs for the Back Mountain, Ray Russin hit 2- for-2 and Chris James had 3-for-4 to set the pace for the Back Moun- tain’s 11 hits before the game was called in the bottom of the fifth under the 10-run rule. The win moved the local team to 12-1 and a chance at the playoffs which begin next week. Back Mountain Legion wins twice The Back Mountain Legion team ran its record to 9-1 in their divi- sion by defeating Plains 1-0 Satur- day and the day before edging out Mountaintop 7-5 behind Eric May and Chris Engle. In Saturday's game Mike Strutko knocked out an RBI single with the bases loaded and no outs in the eighth inning to give the Back Mountain Legion team their 1-0 win. Chris Engle picked up the win striking out 10 at the plate. It was "Engle who scored'fon Strutko's single. In their game with Mountain- top, the Back Mountain team was behind 3-2 going into the bottom of the second inning but a three run homer by Matt Butler gave the local team a 6-3 lead. Rocky Vigorito was the winning pitcher in the Astros-Dodgers game, pitching four and a third innings striking out four and giv- ing up only one hit. He also went two for three, a double and a triple for three RBI's. Rick Matysik went three for four with three doubles and two RBI's and Brian Llewellyn knocked out two hits for the As- tros. Will Woronko pitched seven innings in the Dallas A's game, allowing only three hits and strik- ing out six. 11 HITS POWER WIN The Astros scored four runs in the first inning and never fell be- hind. They collected 11 hits as Brian Llewellyn had two-for-five with a triple and Woronko had two-for-five. Matysik had two-for- four with adouble and Chris Traver went two-for-four with a double. Alvarez, Slaff and Flint had the three hits for the A's. The First Eastern Bank Cards defeated the Astros in an eight inning game on Richie Davis's single. The Cards Eric Stogoski pitched a good game for seven innings striking out eight, allowing only two hits and walking five. Woronko also pitched a good game for the Astros, striking out nine and walk- ing only three. Stogoski went two- for-two for the Cards and scored a run. Woronko picked up the win for the Astros when he relieved Brian Llewellyn in the seventh inning. The Astros exploded for seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat the Yankees. Ryan Picchi had three-for-six and Russ Zim- merman had key hits for the As- tros. The Astros loss to Merchants Bank was credited to Rocky Vigo- rito. DAVIS’ PITCHING, HITS LEAD TEAM TO WIN In their second game last week, the Cards took Beaumont 11-7 behind Davis's pitching and his twodoubles at home plate. Stogoski and Shannon Kelly had two-for- two at the plate and Tim Waslick played outstanding defense at second base for the Cards. Chris Ball knocked out two hits for the Beaumont team. Rich Gouger donated his services as umpire. : The Dallas Dodgers edged the Cards 5-4 scoring their winning run in the eighth inning when Mike Vozniak walked, went to second on Ford's sacrifice and scored on a double to right field by Pat Joyce. Ernie Chamerlain walked then scored on errors and Malak singled, stole second came home on Davis's single for the Cards. The Dodgers scored two runs in the fifth when Joyce took first on an error and came home on Brian Burd's double. Burd stole third nd came home on Charlie Siglin's single. The Cardinals were in front 4-2 in the seventh. Then Burd walked for the Dodgers, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error. Siglin scored the tying run ‘when he walked, stole second and came home on Matt Bogdan's single. Chamberlain and Malak led the Cards with two hits each and Pete Watchulis and Bogdan had two hits each for the Dodgers. -a-fores results and Mary Ann Baines.
