Bednar has graduated from the air transporta- tion specialist course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. During the course, students received instruction in terminal operations safety, rigging and stow- age of cargo, winch operations and the loading, securinganddischarg- ing of cargo and heavy lifts. Bednar is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bednar of 51 Gordon Ave., Dallas. He is a 1989 graduate of Dallas “Senior High School. PFC. KATHLEEN WALSH WALSH COMPLETES BASIC TRAINING Army Reserve Private 1st Class Kathleen M. Walsh has completed basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. During the training, students received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map read- ing, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid and Army history and traditions. Walsh is the daughter of Paul J. and Mary Ann Walsh of 18 West- minster Drive, Dallas. The soldier graduated from Dallas High School in 1983, and received a bachelor’s degree from King's College, Wilkes-Barre in 1988. dl bh Dr Nardone to read paper in Europe Dr. Henry Nardone, professor and chairman of philosophy at King's College, has been invited to present his paper “Corporate Re- sponsibility” at the Second Inter- national Conference on Argumen- tation at the University of Amster- dam, The Netherlands, on June 19-22. Dr. Nardone has published several papers on ethics. He is chairman of the Ethics Institute of Northeast Pennsylvania, and a member of the editorial board of “Thinking Skills Newsletter”, which reaches educators throughout Pennsylvania and surrounding states. The Trucksville resident came to King’s in 1964 and was chair- man of the philosophy depart- ent until 1967. After serving as the chairman of the philosophy department at the San Francisco College for Women for three years, he returned to King's in 1970 where he has taught since. He earned a B.A. from King's and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Catholic University of America. New Province Leadership Team named to serve Sisters of Mercy Sister Maureen McCann, RSM, co-director of the Mercy Consul- tation Center in Dallas will suc- ceed Sister Mary Denny, RSM, as province administrator of the Sisters of Mercy, Province of Scran- ton, for a four-year term that will begin Tuesday, June 19, 1990. Serving with her on the new Province Leadership Team will be Sister Jane Frances Kennedy, RSM, of Dallas, associate admin- istrator; Sister Martha Hanlon, RSM, of Kingston, councilor; Sis- ter Rose Carmel Scalone, RSM, of Bayside, NY, councilor; and Sister Marie Francel D'Andrea, RSM, of Altoona, councilor. Other members of the outgoing Leadership Team are: Sister Marie Turmbach, RSM, of Kingston, associate adminstrator; and Sis- ter Jean Messaros, RSM, Sister Kathleen Mary Smith, RSM, and Sister Ann Crouse, RSM, all of Dallas. An MCC counselor/consultant since 1976, Sister Maureen: is nationally known as a lecturer and workshop presenter in the areas of spiritual and personal growth. She is a native of Brooklyn, was formerly involved with retreat work at Our Lady of Peace Retreat House, Narragansett, RI, and has served as an individual/ marriage counselor for Brooklyn Catholic Charities and as a case worker for the Department of Social Serv- ices, New York. A 1958 graduate of College Misericordia, Sister Maureen earned an M.A. in English from the University of Scranton, an M.S. in Pastoral Counseling from Iona College, and Certification in Spiri- tual Direction at the Albany Con- sultation Center. A former direc- tor of admissions and faculty member of College Misericordia, she has also been a teacher in Wilkes-Barre, Freeland, Towanda and Harrisburg as well as Bay- side, NY. Sister Maureen previously served as a member of the 1973- 76 Leadership Team; has chaired the General Chapter Steering Committee; and has been a dele- gate to the General Chapter and the Provincial Chapter. Looking ahead to her term as province administrator, she said: “Never before in our history have the needs of our brothers and sis- ters cried for mercy and at the same time never before have we, as a community of Mercy, experienced the maturity, freedom and hope to meet those needs.” Sister Jane Frances served two terms as provincial administrator in the 1970s. However, her pri- mary involvement has been in the health care ministry since 1959, when she became a staff nurse at Mercy Hospital Scranton. From 1961 to 1973 she served that hospital as director of nursing, assistant and associate adminis- trator. Following her years as provin- cial administrator, Sister Jane Frances returned to Scranton Mercy as associate administrator of the hospital until 1982 when she became project director for the Task Force on Health Care Col- laboration. For 18 months, during that period, she also served as a special assistant to the president of the Sisters of Mercy Health Corporation, sponsored by the Province of Detroit, in a restruc- turing project. In 1984, Sister Jane Frances became director of health services for the Sisters of Charity of Naza- reth, KY, and several months later was named president of the newly formed Health Care Services Cor- poration of that congregation, a post she held until 1988. In Sep- tember of 1989 she became project director of Systems Review-Mercy Health Services in Farmington, MI. A native of Hazleton, SisterJane Frnces received her diploma as an RN from Mount Carmel Hospital, MI and a BSNE from College Mis- ericordia. She hasan M.S. in Nurs- ing from Marquette University and an M.S. in Hospital Administra- tion from Columbia University. Currently, sheis adirector/trus- tee of College Misericordia, Dallas; Mercy Med-Care, Wilkes-Barre; Mercy Health Services of the South, Altanta, GA; Mercy Health System, Cincinnatti, OH; and Mercy Com- munity Hospital, Port Jervis, NY. She is also chairing her commu- nity’s Core Planning Committee. Sister Martha Hanlon is on sab- batical leave from College Miseri- cordia where she was dean of stu- dents for 10 years following a year as assistant academic dean. She is doing graduate work at Lehigh University. Sister Martha is a member of the Mercy Hospital Scranton Board of Trustees andthe Mount Aloysius | Junior College Board of Trustees. Sister Rose Carmel Scalone is a staff nurse-midwife at pra ny Center Association's free sang | Birth Center in Manhattan; an associate in clinical nursing i Columbia University School of Nursing; and a doctoral candidate in the health education department of Columbia University’s Teachers College. Sister Marie Francel D'Andrea, a member of the faculty of the St. Theresa School in Altoona and the parish administrative staff, previ- ously taught school in Milton, Butler and Dallas. A native of Long Island City, NY, she is a 1969 graduate of College Misericordia with a B.S. in Elementary Education and earned an M.A. in Pastoral Ministry at St. Francis College. ~ Sister Marie Francel is a mem- ber of the Mount Aloysius Junior College Board of Trustees and serves as secretary of that board. Maureen Moran elected to VINA board Back Mountain resident Mau- reen Moran was among seven area residents recently elected to the Boards of Directors of the Visiting Nurse Association and its affili- ated agencies. These volunteers will help to guide the nonprofit agency's continuing efforts to meet the home health care needs of acutely and chronically ill patients in Luzerne County. A retired nurse, Moran is a graduate of the former St. Mary's High School and earned a diploma from the former Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nurs- ing. Her many community activi- ties include the Children’s Festival and the Auxiliary of Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. ‘She and her husband Jack re- side in Shavertown. They have two daughters, Catherine Gower and Maureen Moran, and one son, John Moran, all graduates of King's College. They also have three grandchildren. Mrs. Moran is the daughter of Mrs. Mary McCabe of Wilkes-Barre. Ree, M.D., director of the departmen of obstetrics and gynecology at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, recently received notificaton of recertifica- tion by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gyaecology, Inc. The recertificatibn was based on the successful campletion of a written examinationand the evalu- ation of Roe’s medicalpractice and a six-month case list, In addition to his position at the medical center, Roe se:ves as the director of the department of ob- stetrics and gynecology at the Geisinger Medical Group-Wilkes- Barre which is adjacen to the hospital. Roe earned his medical degree from the University of Mchigan Medical School, and a bactelor of arts degree in biology from Albion College, Michigan. He completed a rotating intern- ship at the Akron City Hospital in Ohio, and a residency progran at the Women's Hospital, University of Michigan Medical School, an ' Arbor, Michigan. Roe has served as the chief of obstetrics /gynecology services anc chief of surgical services for the United States Air Force Regional Hospital in North Dakota and was established in private practice in Michigan prior to the start of his affiliation with Geisinger in Octo- ber, 1986.
