DENMON Staff Writer The Armagh Rhymers, a group of skilled ballad singers, musicians, dancers, story tellers, mimers and comedians gave a brief perform- ance at the Lehman-Jackson Ele- mentary School last week, acting out Irish legends dating back to the 14th century. The Rhymers, from Northern Ireland, revive an old Celtic tradi- tion when Irish players would appear at fairs clad in costumes of willow, straw, flax, bone, sacking Water and masks. The group who entertained the elementary students gave a pre- view of the performance they later performed at St. Stephen's Episco- pal Church in Wilkes-Barre. The once traditionally religious plays have become more spontaneous and exuberant and center on mythic heroes such as St. Patrick, St. Denis and St. George. The performance began with a Master of Ceremonies who entered and called out for space in which to act their play in which they over- come the villain. We can't step in and take over, the towns have to ap- proach us. We have the equip- ment and the facilities but it is up toeach municipality,” Bagley said.
