Born in Bellefonte, Aug. 29, 1928, he was the son of the late Harry and Eva Litzell Alters. He was a senior records officer at the State Correctional Institu- tion at Dallas for 11 years and was previously employed at Rockview Penitentiary, Bellefonte for 11 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the Occu- pation of Japan. Mr. Alters was a member of the Plymouth Lodge 332, F&AM; Muncy Kiwanis Club; Harding Chamber of Commerce; the Ameri- can Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Logan Fire Company, all of Bellefonte; Trout Unlimited, and a program that fingerprinted nearly 500 children as part of a children’s ID program since 1984. * Surviving are his wife, the for- mer Gladys Behers; sons, Daniel, ~ Williamsport; Gary, Bellefonte; Timothy, Dallas; brothers, Max, Bellefonte; Franklin Jr., Jackson- ville, Fla.; five grandchildren. JOHN HARDISKY John Hardisky, of Lincoln Street, Dallas, died May 7, 1990 in the Nesbitt Memorial Hospital, King- ston. : Born in Jackson Township, son of the late Andrew and Mary Chewey Hardisky, he resided in Dallas for the past 43 years. He was a member of Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, the for- mer Margaret Ference; sons, John, Harveys Lake; Robert, Orange; daughters, Carol Chmura, Shav- ertown; Margaret Colarossi, Bos- ton, Mass; Ann Marie Hardisky, Dallas, Texas; sisters, Julia Piznar, Eleanor Hardisky, both of Lehman; seven grandchildren. Interment was in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Lehman. LOIS HENDERSHOT Lois Hale Hendershot, 92, of Harveys Lake, died May 10, 1990 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born in Chinchilla, on May 7, 1898, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Jenny Stark Fish. She resided at Harveys Lake for the last 25 years. Surviving are daughters, Mar- ion Edwards and Ruth Davis, both of Kingston; granddaughter, Mar- ion Kocher, with whom she re- sided; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. THOMAS GUILFORD Mr. Thomas “Trapper” Guilford, 1632 Ransom Road, Dallas, died May 11, 1990 in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital where he had been a patient for the past five days. Born in Forty Fort, he was the son of the late Harry and Lydia Mainwaring Guilford. He had re- sided in Wyoming for many years before moving to Dallas in 1961. Mr. Guilford was a veteran of World War II where he served with the 54th Engineer Battalion of the U.S. Army in the European The- atre. He was employed as an asbes- tos installation installer for 30 years, retiring in 1981. Mr. Guilford was an avid sports- man. He was a member of the Wyo- ming Presbyterian Church, South Mountain Rod and Gun Club and the Heat and Frost Insulators Union, Local 38, Wilkes-Barre. He was preceded in death by brothers, Henry, William and Robert. Surviving are his wife, the for- mer Kathryn Collins, daughters: Mrs. Marlene Sweitzer, West Wyo- ming; Mrs. Carol Chipego, Lehman; Mrs. Dale Valentine, Dover, New Hampshire; Mrs. Elaine MacDonald, Madrid, Spain; sis- ters: Mrs. Ruth White, Clearwater, Fla.; Mrs. Margaret Barrett, Exeter; brothers, Floyd, Kingston; Russell, Anaheim, Calif.; James, West Wyoming; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. ALFRED MILLER Alfred Miller, 81, of Valley View Terrace Park, Dallas, died May 12, 1990, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, where he had been a patient for two days. He had been a guest at the Meadows Nursing Home for the past year. A Ifelong resident of Dallas Township, son of the late John and Elizabeth Wick Miller, he attended Dallas Township schools. Before retiring, he had owned and oper- ated a farm on Hildebrandt Road, Dallas. He was a member of the East Dallas United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Mahler Miller, March 17, 1982. He is survived by a son, William A., Emmaus; daughter, Betty Lou Nordfors, Dallas; brother, Howard, East Dallas; sisters, Mrs. Laura Martin and Mrs. Lena Martin, both of Kunkle; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter. Russell Sr., 63, of Kunkle-Alderson Road, Harveys Lake, died May 8, 1990, in Veter- ans Administration Medical Cen- ter, Plains Township. Born in Scranton, he was the son of Irene Bartels Russell, Scran- ton, and the late Clarence E. Russell. He attended West Scran- ton High School and had been a resident of Harveys Lake for the past four years. He had previously resided in Brown's Mills, N.J. A career serviceman, he had served with the U.S. Army n World War II and Vietnam for two tours of duty. He served with the U.S. Navy dur- ing the Korean War. Recently, he had been employed as a mail handler at the Wilkes- Barre and Kingston post offices. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Scranton, and the Disabled Veter- ans of Pemberton, N.J. Surviving in addition to his mother, are his wife, the former Edythe Roesch; sons, Sgt. William T. II, Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; Andrew F. No injuries in dumpster fire at Misericordia Approximately 200 students were evacuated safely from McHale Hall at College Misericordia follow- ing an early morning dumpster fire on Wednesday, May 9, according to Tom O'Neil, dean of administra- tive and financial affairs. Afteran all-day investigation into the dumpster fire at McHale Hall, the College has determined there was both a malfunction in the alarm system and that the system was inadvertently not turned back on after repairs were completed, fol- lowing a false alarm on Friday, ‘May 4. The system has been com- pletely inspected and serviced by Simplex, the College's fire alarm system company, and it is now fully operational. Additional warn- ing systems have been installed as protection against the situation reoccuring, including smoke alarms placed around the dumpster and garbage disposal chutes located on each floor. Students quickly extinguished it using fire extin- guishers and water. Dallas, Shav- ertown and Kunkle fire companies responded. Dallas Borough Chief Theodore Wright listed the fire cause as accidental, possibly caused by a cigarette dropped into the dumpster. The blaze filled the dormitory’s third and flourth floors with smoke. Five Resident Assistants assisted by other students evacuated eve- ryone from the building immedi- ately. The students returned to their rooms approximately one hour later after firefighters cleared the smoke from the building. The hallways and rooms on the third and fourth floors sustained some smoke damage. Police report LEHMAN TOWNSHIP ONE CAR ACCIDENT Lehman Township police report an accident at the intersection of Route 118 and Mountain View Drive on April 29 at 3:45 a.m. Police say a car driven by Thomas Duffy left the roadway and hit a flag pole. Duffy sustained minor head injuries in the mishap, ac- cording to police. CAR HITS YOUNGSTER Lehman Township police report that a car driven by Troy Creech of Honesdale was travelling on Mar-. ket Street when hit struck a young man. The pedistrian was Joseph Hardinski of Lehman. The nine- year-old sustained leg injuries in the mishap, according to police. KINGSTON TOWNSHIP GUN SHOTS RESULT IN CHARGES Police reported a case of aggra- vated assault, simple assault, reck- less endangerment and unlawful restraint against John P. Brdarick Jr., Bunker Hill Road, Kingston Township, for shooting at and threatening Robert Balasso, with a shotgun. FOUR CAR PILE-UP Police report they investigated a four-car accident on Route 309. John Chernavage, driver of a 1988 Chevrolet did not stop in time and slid into the car driven by Bernard Olszyk of Harveys Lake, causing a chain reaction. Paul Ungvarsky, Harveys Lake, driving a 1986 Suburu slid into the second car and Robert Stark of Harveys Lake in a 1987 Toyota pickup slid into the Suburu. TREATED FOR INJURIES AFTER ACCIDENT Police stated that Anna Mae Smith, Noxen, driving a 1988 Ford was taken to Geisinger for treat- ment following an accident on route 309 where she tried to pull into the passing lane when she saw a car passing her. Patio Covers ACCIDENT RESULTS IN DUI CHARGE Police charged Kevin Bednar- sky, Shavertown, with driving under the influence after an acci- dent on Route 309 where he was traveling north, struck a curb on the right side of the road, contin- ued on the highway and struck a 1978 Plymouth driven by Michael School, Shavertown. Police stated that Bednarsky showed some signs of drinking and when given a test it indicated greater than .10 blood alcohol content. He was taken to the Processing Center where he refused blood alcohol testing and was charged with DUI. DALLAS BOROUGH ALTERED PLATES BRINGS ON CHARGES Louis Morgan Jones, 19, of Edwardsville was cited by police on charges of Altered, Forged or counterfeit document after he was found to have been in possession of two registration plates for his vehicle, according to Dallas Bor- ough police. Patrolman James Martin re- ported that he pulled over avehicle operated by Jones and discovered that the plate had been altered. Jones was then cited and the plates were confiscated. CHARGED WITH DUI Dallas Borough police report that William Paul Horner, Jr. of Harveys Lake was cited for driving under the influence on May 6. Patrolman James Martin pulled over Horner's vehicle on route 415. Horner failed a field sobriety test and was found to have a blood alcohol level of .16 percent. A Fon r i] a CHARGED WITH DUI Dallas Borough police report that Anthony J. Fiske of Dallas was cited for driving under the influence on May 6. Fiske's car was pulled over and he failed a field sobriety test. A blood alcohol test showed that his blood alcohol level was .17 percent, according to police. i ONE CAR ACCIDENT Dallas Borough police investi- gated an accident on Route 309 on May 10. Police say that a vehicle driven by John D. Parry of Dallas was traveling on 309 when it went sideways and off the roadway before hitting a guardrail. The cars rear tires ended on top of the guard- rails. The car also knocked down a speed limit sign and hit a utility pole.
