Wednesday, February 14,1990 9 SCAOOL i about bees The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Dallas students learn all Students at Dallas Elemen- tary School recently enjoyed an assembly program and workshops titled “Dancin’ with the Honey Bees" presented by Cliff Wright - Sunflower of Honey Bear Farms. “Dancin’ with the Honey- bees” is an environmental science program with con- cepts, facts and ideas of how humans are connected to the natural world. This cultural arts program includes poetry, ' prose, puppetry, music, mime, dance and participatory theatre. : The program included an observation hive of 5,000 bees enclosed behind glass and the precision of a beekeeper work- ing a beehive. The entire as- sembly was turned into a working hive, complete with queen, nursemaids, baby bees, construction workers, drones, guards and flowers. The children learned first- hand about the delicate balance of the bee colony and the world around it; how fruits and flowers depend on bees to reproduce, and how important that is to all humans. After this “Honeybee Dance,” the children met in workshops to taste various honeys, to feel and smell beeswax closeup and to learn to distinguish honey hives from other nests. The children were able to share their bee fears, experi- ences and questions and made - a beeswax candle to take . home. Fa H i Lake-Lehman teacher honored Mrs. Christine Kopcho has been recognized by the Mathematics Education Class at Wilkes College «as a teacher who has inspired others to consider the teaching profession as a career and whose > classroom actions have had a profound effect on the lives of her students. : Mrs. Kopcho was recommended for the honor by Mark Zurinski who remembered Mrs. Kopcho as being an excellent teacher whose excitement about learning spread to all of her students, and whose A.P. Dallas Middle School sends valentines to veterans The students of the Dallas Middle School recently participated in the Ann Landers Valentines for 4 Veterans project. Almost 300 valentines were collected by Miss Maryalice Umphred, seventh-grade % English teacher, and have been sent to the Hines VA Hospital in Illinois, where they will be sorted and then distributed to VA hospitals throughout the country. Honors and graduates Three local residents named to Who's Who Three local King's College students have been named for inclusion in the 1990 edition of Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges”. Named to King's Dean’s List Dr. Donald Farmer, vice president and dean for academic affairs at King's College, announced recently 381 students were named to the » college's fall 1989 Dean's List, signifying a grade point average of 3.4 or better. ERIC STEADLE Barrett Feldman's work to be exhibited The work of Barrett Feldman, an art student at Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, Kingston, has been selected to appear in the regional exhibit of the 1990 Scholastic Art Awards. Dates of the regional art exhibit are February 5-25 at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, Wilkes-Barre. Christy Campbell on Dean's List Christy Campbell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Campbell, RD 1, Hunlock Creek, was recently named to the Dean's List for the fall semester, 1989 at Wilson College.
