Service program helps youths and community By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer : Doing good in the community can help local juvenile offenders avoid fines and other penalties while learning how important their contribution to others can be. Dallas Borough Manager Mil- ton Lutsey has assumed the re- sponsibility of finding commu- nity service projects for juvenile offenders who have been man- dated by District Magistrate Earl Gregory to perform such service in lieu of paying a fine or receiv- ing another penalty. Juveniles who agree to per- & form community service work @& must complete the number of § hours dictated by the magis- trate doing such work as as- signed by Lutsey. When each young offender completes his community service, Lutsey completes a form and sends it to a representative at the court- house. Ifthey do not, their names are turned back to the magis- trate and they are punished according to their violation of the law. : “The magistrate usually lev- ies fines or sentences relative to the violation which are usually such offenses as driving under the influence, underage drink- ing, vandalism, harrassment, etc.,” Lutsey explained. The Luzerne County Court en- tered the agreement with the Dallas Borough council, who set up the community service under the supervision of the borough manager. : “My first experience in the project was with a juvenile from a split home,” Lutsey said. “Normally, these juveniles help the police, clean the cruiser, clean the ambulance or some- times assist the road depart- ment. “ThenI thought of the library,” Lutsey explained. “The library personnel agreed with the idea and the juvenile who worked there did a great job. Lutsey is presently seeking community organizations that can use these juveniles to assist in some type of community serv- ice projects. “I'd like to see these kids be- come involved in some construc- tive community service, some type of work which would help them realize how important their service is to others,” he con- cluded. Organizations in the Back Mountain who can help in this program are asked to call the borough manager at his office weekdays between 9 a.m. to noon. The phone number is 675-1389.
