Doctors are concerned about pregnant women who have symptoms associated with CMV. Pregnant women who get a fever or who feel unusually fatigued along with fe- ver should be checked immediately for CMV. The earlier in pregnancy it strikes, the more danger there is to the infant. The newborn child of a CMV mother can suffer from a variety of problems--differing de- grees of mental retardation, behavioral ab- normalities and physical malformations. Very recently a drug was discovered which may successfully treat CMV in adults, but it is not FDA approved yet and has not been extensively tested at this time. CMV was first identified in humans in 1956. You may have heard more about it recently because of its association with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). It has been known for some time that most gay men have CMV, which can be transmitted sexually or through the blood. Doctors now suspect that some of the complications of AIDS may be related to the fact that they have CMV.
