DENMON Staff Writer Dallas High's Steve Oliver is considered the top underciass- man runner in the state, accord- ing to his cross-country and in- door track coach William Kvashay. “The weekend of November 25 Steve ran in the Kinney North- eastern Regionals at Cortland ‘Park, New York and came in fifth for Pennsylvania to receive an award,” Kvashay said. “Steve was the only underclassman in the meet from Pennsylvania and Penn- sylvania came in second in the meet. There were hundreds of runners from 12 states entered and Steve came in 44th in the whole group, a great achievement for a junior.” The son of Mr. and Mrs. Tho- | mas F. Oliver of Midway Manor, Shavertown, Steve has afinestring ° of achievements behind him dur- ing his past year of serious run- ning. He took first in Districts this year to advance to the state PIAA competition where he came in sixth, the five boys ahead of him all upperclassmen. Steve entered the CIiff Robbins Run in Wilkes- Barre and finished first. The week prior to the Kinney Northeastern Regionals, Steve . came in second in the first road race he ever ran at Berwick. He ' also ran in the Lebanon Valley Invitational where he came in Steve Oliver third, at Conrad Weisser near Reading where he also took third and came in third at the State College Invitational. Steve's goal for next year is to finish in the top eight at the Kin- ney Invitational Meet. If he does, he will receive an all expenses paid trip to San Diego, California, to compete in the national meet there. Steve broke the course record at Dallas this past season with a time of 16:21. He also broke the course records at Hanover, : Pittston Area and Northwest. Last year he also played bas- ketball, but this year he is on the. indoor track team and will con-- centrate on running to prepare for $ spring track and next year's cross : country and track.
