10 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, November 15, 1989 SPORTS Last minute interception saves 6-0 win for Mounts By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer In a hard-fought finish to an up and down season, the Dallas Mountaineers came away from Saturday's Old Shoe game with a ~ slim 6-0 victory over a tough Lake- Lehman team. “Lake-Lehman came well pre- pared and they played great foot- ball the first half,” said Dallas coach ~ Ted Jackson. “They had several ~ opportunities to score, but our kids hung with them in the first half. “Sam Jayne was hurt all week and he made only three plays and ad to come out of the game which — hurt us. It wasn't until the fourth quarter that our kids got things moving. Then Chris Ruth caught Straigis' pass for a 21 yard gain and a first down. We finally made the big play when Barry Miller took a pass from Straigis and ran for 30 yards to the Knights 28-yard line for a first down. Miller is a great big-play athlete. He's what every- one wants on a team.” Straigis and Miller gained more yardage for the Mountaineers to chalk up another first down and then on a fourth down and inches Straigis made the first down. For most of the afternoon it seemed that the Knights and Mounts would share the shoe for another year. Then Straigis used three downs to get to the two-yard line and on the next play took the ball in for six points. Chris Williams kick hit the goal post and the Mountaineers were in front 6-0. The Knights didn’t give up and Sam Gorgone gave his team a first down at midfield on a quarterback keeper with less than three min- utes remaining in the game. On the next play Gorgone threw a long pass, but Miller intercepted at the 14-yard line. The Mountain- eers were unable to get a first down and were forced to punt with less than two minutes remaining. Gorgone then heaved along pass to Jim Chamberlain which put his Knights back in Mountaineer ter- ritory. Then Gorgone threw a pass to Mike Taylor two plays later for another first down with only sec- onds remaining. Gorgone continued to put the ball in the air. After an incomplete pass and a pass to Jim Chamber- lain who lost the ball when he was tackled by VanOrden in the end zone, Chris Ruth intercepted Gor- gone's third pass to end the game Knight's threat. The origins of the Old Shoe game RE THAN A NEW Dallas resident Carol Kristan found this clipping from the No- vember 19, 1948 Dallas Post in a Dallas Township High School year- book she bought at an auction. It shows the starting lineups for a game between Dallas and King- ston Township high schools. DENMON Staff Writer The score was tied 1-1 in the Lake-Lehman-Newport game with only eight seconds remaining in the game when Jessica Billger snared a deflected shot and put it in past Becky James for the win- ning goal, knocking the Lady Knights out of the playoffs. ~ Just seconds before Newport had a corner shot which goalkeeper Becky James saved from coming in the cage. Newport scored their first goal in the first period on a shot by Heidi Wamer unassisted 17 min- utes into the game. The score 2-1 on late goal continued 1-0 until the second half when Wendy Skibitsky scored unassisted at 14:00 into the pe- riod. Each team had five shots on goal and nine corners. James had three saves and Newport's goalie had two. Coach Jean Lipski said she was proud of her team, a team no one thought would be in the playoffs at the beginning of the season.
