6 The Dallas Post Centennial Edition Section 2 Wednesday, October 18, 1989 Shavertown was once ‘Bloody Run By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer In the early 1800's, Shaver- town, said to be named after the Shaver family of which there were many members in that area, was once called Bloody Run. Not a pretty name but an appropriate one, for on top of the hill in Shavertown was the Farrell and Holcomb properties and behind them a slaughterhouse the blood from which gave Shavertown the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers' Association The Dallas Post P.O. We commend you and wish you all the best as the next 100 ' name Bloody Run. In 1908, Main Street was the major thoroughfare in the town; there was no highway as we now know it. Business places such as the blacksmith shop, a plan- ing mill, and a store owned by Dorman and Arminda Woolbert were grouped around Main Street as were as several homes. Later there was a market where Shavertown residents bought their supplies. In later years it was owned by Eally Gosart and then the two story building was torn down to make way for the highway. There was a one room school which was attended by children of the Shavertown families. It was located in the rear of where Burger King now stands. Later a second room was added to it, and it was moved across the street where it was used as the Back Mountain YWCA head- quarters. There were large stockpiles of lumber with big sheds to protect it in the area where the Shaver- town Lumber Company now stands . Frank Hubbell built the origi- nal lumber yard in 1908 and supplies were shipped to him by Old Mill ; freight to the rear of the building where the lumber was unloaded, often times late at night. The lumber company had a number of owners over the years and Mrs. Edna Johnson served as secretary for most of them. The above photo is of the last old mill in Trucksville which was located in the area which is now part of Frances Slocum lake. : i) JEDIDIA'S RESTAURANT DINER Celebrating 6 Years "What Makes Us Nice Is Quality And Price!" + Breakfast Served Anytime * | Luncheon Buffet: Monday to Saturday 11 am - 3:30 pm # Lunch is always ready at Jedidia's GREAT Dinner Buffets: Monday to Saturday 4 pm -9 pm Sundays: 11 am - 8 pm Includes: 10 Hot Entrees And More!
