Dr. Sheldon Spear, of Shaver- town, professor of history at LCCC, will speak on the Wyoming Valley ‘during the Great Depression. The presentation will focus on the impact the depression had on the people of the area. Dr. Spear will discuss how the people of the area dealt with the depression; the steps the area took to recover from the depression; and the general effect the Great Depression had on the people of Northeastern Pennsylva- ‘nia. Dr. Spear is the author of “Chapters in Wyoming Valley His- tory”, an essentially biographical examination of the history of the Wilkes-Barre area. His other works include “The U.S. & The Persecu- tion of the Jews in Germany 1933- 1939" and “Pacifist Radicalism in the Postwar British Labour Party: Local attorney David Hiscox was recently appointed lecturer and is teaching "the course “Probate Administration” at King's College this semester. Hiscox, Dallas Township, is a partner in the law firm of Rosenn, Jenkins & Greenwald, Wilkes- Barre, and practices law in the firm's estates, trusts and real es- tate departments. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Luzerne County Bar Association. He is also a member of the Board of Luzerne hs i} County Head Start, Inc.; a mem- Al ber and past president of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Jaycees; a member of the Board of Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilkes-Barre; and a member of the Georgetown Settlement Associa- tion Foundation. He is a graduate of Wesleyan University and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Frank Lutinski has completed training and is a certified cabinet and wood care specialist. Morel.” Dr. Paul Zbiek, of Harveys Lake, assistant professor of history at King's College, will speak on the importance of high school sports in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Dr. Zbiek's discussion will examine how high school sports evolved in the Wyoming Valley and the effect they had on the many small com- munities in the region. The lecture will focus on such topics as: the relationship between student development and athletic achievement; the strong commu- nity identification with their local teams; the role of athletics in the ethnic assimilation process; and how the total experience brought about a unifying spirit in each community, but at the same time caused increased separitism in the ‘Wyoming Valley as a whole. Dr. Zbiek has published articles on the ethnic history of Pennsylva- nia, and is completing An Ethnic and Cultural Atlas of the Wyoming Valley, which is planned for publi- cation next year.
