8 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, October 4, 1989 SOCIAL “55” Alive driving course has only a few openings available. Course attendance will be limited to 30 senior citizens having valid license. The demand for the “55” Alive Driving Course continues to be popular with our Senior Citizens 50 years and older. A recent meet- ing of the instructors found these courses popular in all areas of our counties. On October 7 the course will be held in the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, East End Blvd., Wilkes-Barre. This one day ‘The dog days of August may well be over, but dog days are just beginning at the SPCA of Luzerne County and more than 900 other shelters nationwide. On behalf of these shelters and the more than 13 million dogs that end up home- less each year, Meaty Bone Dog Biscuits and Jerky Treats Dog Snacks are sponsoring the ninth annual Adopt-A-Dog Month cam- paign in October. “This month-long effort draws attention to the numbers of per- fectly healthy, beautiful puppies and dogs that end up at our shel- ter, as well as others, each year,” said Edward Gross, director of the SPCA of Luzerne County. “It's unfortunate that, nationwide, only about 27 percent of these hoem- less dogs are ever adopted. This Meadows volunteers recognized Romayne Morris and Catherine Wright, Dallas, were recently presented Meadows Green Smocks by the Auxiliary of the Meadows Nursing Center in recognition of their completion of 50 hours of volun- presentation will consist of atten- dance 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Upon com- pletion of the course, certificates of completion will be forwarded to National AARP for registering in the computer file. Seniors who are registered may be entitled to a 10% discount on their auto insurance policy. This can amount to over $30.00 per year. Each registration is valid for three years. Many seniors report savings of $50.00 a year. Due to the registration for this course, seniors are asked to send their $7.00 fee, made out to AARP, program aims to better that figure at all shelters.” : The SPCA of Luzerne County is open to potential adopters from 11 a.m. to3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekends. As an added incentive for those considering adoption, all October dog adopters will receive a “doggie bag" filled with a congratu- latory letter, dog skills training booklet, Jerky Treats and Meat Bone samples, and coupons for more products. Also in the doggie bags, new dog adopters will find an entry form for the 1990 Poster Dog Contest, a chance to win from $5,000 to $500 and a year's supply of meaty Bone andJerky Treats. Any adopted dog is eligible to enter the fourth an- nual contest which names one dog teer service to residents at the Center. October marks ninth annual Adopt-A-Dog month to serve as an example of the types of wonderful pets available in shelters across the nation. “We would encourage anyone in the area who has ever adopted a dog to pick up an entry form at our shelter as the sponsors will also be awarding cash grants to the shel- ters from which the dogs were adotped,” Gross said.
