For many students this represents many exciting opportunities for learning, meet- ing new friends, and beginning new relationships. When con- sidering a new relationship, or looking at an existing one, itis a good idea to ask the following re | questions about one’s partner: 1. Does he/she like and ad- mire his/her parents? 2.Howdoes he/she get along with other family members? 3. Does he/she have close friends? 4. Does he/she have other interests besides you? 5. Does he/she play with weapons? : 6. When angry, does he/she throw or break things? 7. Does he/she abuse alco- hol or drugs? : 8. Does he/she get jealous when you talk about your friends? 9. Does he/she insist on knowing where you've been and who you've been with when you're not with him/her? safe dating 10. Does he/she get angry if you are late? 11. Do you find yourself changing your habits, way of dress, or behavior to suit him/ her? 12. Do you like yourself less after you have been with him/ her? If you answer YES to these questions, especially those con- cerning control and anger, your relationship is becoming an abu- sive one. Be wary of someone who is jealous, who doesn’t want you to improve yourself, or doesn’t want you to have many friends. If you don't like yourself after you've been with him/her, be concerned about those feel- ings. Adapted from Getting Free - A Handbook for Women in Abu- sive Relationships, Ginny NiCarthy.
