» The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, September 13, 1989 1 Mounts jump to early lead, hold on for 21-14 win over Valley West By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer The Dallas Mountaineers lost little time in letting the Wyoming Valley West Spartans know they came to play football last Friday night. In the opening minutes of the first quarter the Mounts began a 46-yard drive, and with five minutes remaining in the quarter, Quarterback Jay Straigis took the ball in from the one yard line to put six points on the board for Dallas. Sophomore Chris Williams made it 7-0 by kicking the extra point. Sam Jayne did his part in the scoring by leading the drive for the Dallas Mountaineers. In the sec- ond quarter, Mount George Lada- mus intercepted a Spartan pass at the Valley West 24-yard line to set up a second Dallas touchdown. Tony Baldo scored the six points for the Mountaineers by going over from the 12-yard line and Chris Williams again kicked the extra point to give Dallas a 14-0 lead. In the third period, the Moun- taineers scored a third time when Barry Miller tipped a Spartan pass on the Dallas 46-yard line, then Jeremiah VanOrden caught a 29- yard pass on the Spartans six. On. NEXT GAME: Sat. - 1:00 PM Northwest at home the next play Miller took the ball in for a touchdown. Williams kicked his third extra point of the game and his seventh consecutive point since the season opened. “Our kids played great defense,” said Coach Ted Jackson. “Valley West is a good Division I team and they played very good football in the third quarter. They are a big team and outweighed our kids about 40 pounds per man, but our kids stayed right in there. “I'm proud of the way we moved the ball and kept it out of the Spartans hands. We got sluggish in the third quarter and had some penalties, but the kids were tired. We have nine kids that play both ways and at halftime they were dead tired, but they hung in there. We had some big plays in the sec- ond half but we killed ourselves with penalties. “Wayde Post was great on de- fense and played a key part in giving us good field position and Sam Jayne was responsible for one of our touchdowns. Miller is a workhorse for us and is doign an excellent job.” The Spartans rallied in the sec- | ond half and played more aggres- sively, led by Ken Andrejko and Joe Arale. They scored two touch- downs to come within seven points of the Mountaineers with less than 12 minutes remaining in the game. The Dallas defense then came to life and took control of the ball. The defense held the Spartans to only 53 yards while the Mountaineers . ran up more than 200. Straigis completed 11 of 22 passes for 142 yards with VanOrden catching | three of them. Miller had eight carries for 75 yards. This week the Mountaineers play Northwest at home Saturday. “You can never count out North- west,” Jackson said. “They're young and inexperienced but they play hard. Winning our first two games is good but it will be good to play at home. It will be the first time in four weeks we have played on our home field. Our two scrimmage games and our first two games were played away. Those wins helped our kids improve their game but we still have to take just one game at a time. There's a long season ahead.” By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer Coach Tom Kilduffs 1989 champion team lost to the Ber- wick Bulldogs 174-184 last Tues- dayin their match at Irem Temple Country Club. Junior Paul Deeble was low scorer for the Mountaineers with 42 while Sean Shovlin came in second firing a 43. Jeff Mokychick shot 40 and Mike Prokopchak scored 50. The Mountaineers defeated Dallas golfers win one, lose one Wyoming Seminary 198-222 Thursday at Irem Temple with Deeble and John McKeever shooting identical scores of 486, Mike Prokopchak and Jim Rynolds each fired a 48. Coach Kilduff said his Moun- taineers face an uphill fight this season since there are only two starters returning from last sea- son. Last year's team finished runnerup to Coughlin in Divi- sion I with a 14-2 record. ~ McKeever providing the leader- It is a rebuilding year for the Mountaineers with Deeble and ship. The Mountaineers goal this year is to have a winning season and have a solid team next year. Mike Prokopchak, Jeff Mokychic, juniors; and Jim Reynolds, so- phomores are also mainstays and Bill Tabor, Tom O'Donnell, Gordy Williams and Sean Shovlin are among the team members being counted on by Kilduff. Knight golf team works on basics By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer Knight golf coach Mike Sharok has a very young golf team this year and is concentrating on teach- ‘ing them the basics. “There's a lot more to the game than winning,” Sharok said, and his first priority is to teach the athletes good golf play. The Knights lost 163-193 to Piitston Area, Tuesday, Sept. 4, on the Emanon Course with Knight Dan Payne hitting a 46, Ryan Leahey firing 47, Jeff Hynick 48 and Rob VanGorder 52. Thursday Bishop O'Reilly de- feated the Knights 199-203 on the Twin Oaks Course with Jeff Hyn- ick leading the Knights with 49, Jess Sorber hitting 55 and Ryan Leahey scoring 56. The loss drops the Knights to O- 4.
