They were married August 28, 1939 by the late Rev. T.C. Hesson in St. John’s Reformed Church, St. John’s, Pennsylvania. Their attendants were Mr. and Mrs. William Stahr of Drums. Their son, Leonard Thacher and his wife are residents of Woodbridge, Virginia. Their granddaughter, Kimberly Thacher graduated from Wyoming Seminary in May and is now attending the University of West Virginia. Foster grandparent program seeks volunteers “At the end of every rainbow there's a child, a child with excep- tional, special needs. A child with love to give that outshines any pot of gold.” For 24 years, Foster Grandpar- ent volunteers have given their talents and love to children with exceptional needs. For 24 years, Foster Grandparents have held out helping hands and found thou- sands of little hands to hold. Now, additional Foster Grandparents are needed in Luzerne and Wyoming Counties to work with these spe- cial children. In order to become a Foster Grandparent, you must be at least 60 years old and of limited income. Also, you need to possess a love for children. Once enrolled in the program, you will work 20 hours per week with children who have exceptional and special needs. Because it can “cost” money to volunteer in terms of travel ex- penses, meals, clothing, etc., Fos- ter Grandparents receive a tax free stipend of $2.20 for each hour that you volunteer. In addition to the stipend, other benefits would in- clude a free annual medical exam; reimbursed transportation ex- penses; paid holidays, sick and vacation time. There are no special educational requirements or previous training necessary to become a Foster Grandparent. The Foster Grand- parent Program staff and staff of the host agencies will provide all the training that you will need. Also, the FGP staff will find an appropriate, enjoyable placement for you that is close to your home. Currently in Luzerne County, 77 Senior Citizens share their time, knowledge and affections with 171 disadvantaged children in day care centers, schools and hospitals. The host agency for our local Foster Grandparent Program is the Luzerne/Wyoming Counties Bu- reau for the Aging. Currently, the Foster Grandparent Program is recruiting several new Foster Grandparents for Luzerne and Wyoming Counties.
